The Apocalypse Experience
    #18997954 - 10/18/13 11:15 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

One 21 year old is comfy living at home with his parents, not appreciative of anything, mediocre and unmotivated. To spice things up a bit, uber master hypnotist Derren Brown takes it to the next level and designs an actual fucking apocalypse in his life. 7 weeks of planning and preparing, social engineering and state of the art mind bending, to actually make him believe that the world as we know it has come to an end. All this is aimed at finding out if one's identity can be pushed into shape by necessity, into more leadership, confidence and decisiveness.

To those unfamiliar with Derren's work, you may want to see other mind experiments of his, like forcing ideas in someone's head, turning someone into a killer, instigating honest people to an armed robbery and countless feats of master hypnotism and social engineering. This apocalypse however is the longest, most complex design I've seen from him so far, stretching for those 7+ weeks over a large area, and hundreds of actors. I for one am impressed with the massive effort.

I wonder where many of us would be, if our peers, teachers, parents or anybody ever put this amount of thought and design into our life experiences.

That is the most fucked up shit ever. Long story short, they manipulate this guy in all KINDS of privacy invasive ways and convince him the world is ending. After they make him believe hes in "The Last of us" Video game, they make him feel like shit until he appreciates his moms cooking :bored:

Fucking stupid dude, and a COMPLETE mind fuck. Im sure that type of shit could turn psychologically healthy people into nut cases. Anyone EVER pulls that shit with me they will get punched in the face, and taken to court for the millions of dollars they spent making a publicity stunt out of my life, and twisted my mind. Pretty sure Id rather smoke Salvia in a room filled with strobe lights and alarm clocks going off in 2 min intervals until the trip ends while some guy in a demon suit dances around. Fuck them.....all because little Timmy or whatever the fuck his name is worked a minimum wage job and lived with his mother?

Don't be hating on this stuff dude, it's an amazing feat of mindfuckery, and I'm pretty sure most of us comfy Westerners in pretty houses could use a little challenge like that now and then. For the self-reliance value. It's confidence-building.

The bit about the mom part I kind of agree with, it was her fault for being way too accommodating, serving fruit on platters with an undertone of passive-aggressive resentment at the same time. Like keep your fruit bitch and choke on it, let me watch my TV show in peace.

Also, you have to remember that the guy VOLUNTEERED to have his life fucked with at a professional level. He's in the UK, where Derren and his shenanigans are well known, so he knew what he was getting into when he signed that waiver before the interview. What can be relied on is that it's reasonably safe, other than that all bets are off.

I do wonder though, how many hours of masturbation footage they have of him, with all those cameras in his house

My first thought when the hidden cameras were installed.

I think 'Steven' was an actor too and the whole thing was a magic trick on the viewer but, regardless, it's a good exercise, and I think one which can be applied or spontaneously forms in the psychedelic experience - the whole death/rebirth thing via a kind of (arguable) virtual reality experience. I had some stark, life-changing realisations when I first smoked weed but I'm still seeking a heavy psychedelic death-rebirth experience - one like Stan Grof might describe.

Also reminds me of the initiation rites some groups might do, which I think are somewhat lacking in our (Western) culture - unless you consider (overcoming) our culture a grand initiation rite in-itself.

I don't think the guy was an actor, and I am saying this as a big Derren fan. I've watched A LOT of his series for years and years, and on most of them he specifically states in the beginning, that no actors or stooges are planted, other than the ones specified (to manipulate the mark in some way). He'd have a lot of credibility to lose if he employed actors and then they spoke out later, that his tricks are fake.

It is hard to believe if you just see the tip of the iceberg, without hundreds of much simpler tricks, misdirections, NLP and hypnosis feats. Some of them are explained in detail, like the advertising one.

Organized initiation rites are definitely lacking, I mean there are a few but they're a complete joke. Awesome idea, the escape itself as an initiation rite

My experience is that when people constantly have to insist that they are not doing anything to deceive you, they are usually deceiving you.

Additionally, if they were actors a simple confidentiality agreement would most likely solve the speaking out problem. They would make them sign an agreement saying that if they told anyone, that legal action could be taken against them.

Again, after years of watching these shows, I think they're doable without actors. The large number of tricks I've seen broken down and explained contribute to this. It's just an incredible amount of preparation to get it to work. Social engineering taken to the extreme.

Here an example:

Or better yet one with a supermarket full of people:

I imagine it would get risky and quite costly to employ a shopping mall full of actors, and rely on them all going along with the confidentiality agreements, all for a short 2 min segment of his show.
