how old is too old

Have some truffels dried some year and a half, not more than two years ago. I actually forgot about them . they were forgotten in a plastic bag (air untight). Can they be any good now? How much more now would be equivalent of "freshly dried"?

If you found a sandwich that you put into a plastic bag a year ago, would you eat it?

If they were properly dried, then they should be fine to eat. Do they look/smell off?

They smell like well dried truffles. If properly means thoroughly, I guess, they have been dried quite well.

Is it a fair assumption they might have lost half their potency?

I haven't ever eaten year old truffles. But they may have lost some potency just because they weren't in an air tight container all those years. Its worth a try to test them out, why not?

If they were fully dry and stored properly, they'll still work.  I've pulled out some five or six year old stones before and they were somewhat degraded, but still good.

Yes, I will give them a try.

What potency would you estimate for two year old ones? I want to grind and make tea of them. Will double the amount be an overkill?
