No. It's impossible to breed billions of spores as identical 'twins',and even if you could they couldn't reproduce because they'd all be the same mating type.
If you want to keep a stellar strain, use master culture slants. You can then grow the exact strain for decades or more. RR

Or just a really poor reader? I can see now why RR felt the need to make the mushroom videos, nobody seems able to read anymore.

RR was replying to the question of 'breeding' a mushroom via natural methods / strain isolation etc.
I think anything is hypothetically possible when you rewrite / construct a species' genome from scratch, so called 'designer fungi.' I wouldn't know what else to call it.
Genes determine everything about every organism from the appearance to how the fungus produces spores and the genetic structure of said spores. Through genetic engineering why wouldn't it be theoretically possible despite being entirely impractical?
Though we'll never see it. I think it's too early in our understanding of genetic engineering to completely rule out the possibility that it could be artificially created in a test tube.

Yes you moron. Set off a lot of nuclear devices and watch not just the human species, but all life on earth die off.
No, it is not advantageous for an organism such as a human or plant or fungi to clone itself with no genetic variability, unless nothing else around evolves either and it is at its apex. (Which is never the case)
How ignorant are you of evolutionary biology? Judging from your posts, your ignorance is willing.
They have reconstructed the genome of the neandrethal man, and a couple species of long extinc plants and Wolly mammoths.
That took decades of work, an a collaboration of scientists on a global scale. Talk about "unlimited" resources. Nobody is going to do this with magic mushrooms. There are more important things to do with this technology right now.
Good luck getting all the restrction enzymes and whatever the heck else you need to re-construct a 3. something billion base pair genome.
(FYI its a lot of work doing just 100 or 200 base pairs)

Forgive me for seeking knowledge. I never said I was going to do it, I'm just trying to understand why we can do it with plants and not fungi, an explanation, not a sweeping blanket answer with no reasoning to back it up.

Yeah dude I don't get why everyone is getting so pissed off talking about this. Though the question is a little silly / out of the realm of probability I think it's an interesting thought experiment.
I always wonder about random stuff like this. I'm pretty ADD. Especially since my job can get pretty repetitive at times I find my brain thinking a lot of 'what ifs' to keep it entertained.
I always thought curiosity was a virtue.
