new! no contamination or mycelium help
    #18995452 - 10/18/13 12:43 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

first timer at growing. My first 5 jars had contaminates. The new batch has no contaminates but no mycelium. They are BRF cakes. It has been about 4 weeks now. Is it possible i inoculated jars wile to hot or something?

Without you walking us through your exact procedure - yes, that could be the issue. I have found that after about 8 hours of cooling at normal room temperature, steam sterilized PF cakes are cool enough for inoculation, but a 12 hour cooling period is recommended.

It could also be a bad syringe, room temperature, incorrect moisture content, no gas exchange (also an issue for you - take the foil off!), non-organic rice flour (may have anti-fungal ingredients), etc...

It's fine to start inoculating when the jars
are just warm to the touch. Taking off the
fool may help with gas exchange. But isn't
a sure failure by leaving it on.
Sounds like maybe a bad syringe, usually
after no signs of growth after 21 days. You
should probably scrap them and stay over

For the reason being, to fully sterilize the substrate
would take far too long. Several days actually. We only
Sterilize long enough to allow the Mycelium a head
start on any contaminate that may take hold. Of course
over time all substrate will contaminate.
You may want to walk us through your procedure, or
Tek that you followed, as some information may be
outdated.

Sounds normal, was the syringe stored properly?
Didn't get to hot at any time?

I used 2 cups vermiculite, 1 cup water. then 1 cup brown rice flour. Filled my jars up half inch to the top. Cleaned the top then filled the rest of the way with vermiculite. Then i put them in the pressure cooker for an hour. I let them cool for a few hour, they were defiantly warm to the touch. Used isopropyl on my cloves to clean the counter and the jars. Sprayed disinfectant everywhere. I put my syringe together and used a lighter to burn until it was red hot. I then inoculated each jar quickly replacing the tin foil. Put them in a plastic Tupperware. Put a shirt on top and put them in front of a mini heater set at 80 degrees

It's really not that difficult. You just need to have patience and follow the teks - verbatim. If you PC'ed your jars and only waited a few hours for them to cool, you probably fried all the spores. The jars must be cool to the touch - if the jar is even slightly warm, chances are the center of the cake is still too hot.

It seems that most of what you did was good, but you made one critical mistake. Take your time, read and re-read the procedure multiple times before performing each step, and second guess everything you do. Honestly most of the hard work is preparation, and the rest is just having the patience to quietly wait for the mycelium to grow.
