Pressure cooker, worth it?
    #18995448 - 10/18/13 12:42 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So I've seen some people say that they use pressure cookers to sterilize and that they're very good for that but then a bunch of other people just use a regular cooking pot.
I was wondering if it's really worth it to buy a pressure cooker? This will be my first grow and I've got everything except for the pressure cooker now. There's a place near my house selling them for around $70-120 depending on size and I'm just wondering if for a beginner it'd be best to buy one just in case. Thanks!

If you're doing the PF Tek, they aren't necessary, but can be beneficial.  If you're doing grains, they are essential.

Man up and get a pressure cooker. Then dip a ball in it.

It's worth the convenience, even with the pf tek. You can use a pc for cooking too, they rock.

Seriously though, get the biggest one you can afford. It's better to have and not need than need and not have.

Worth it?
Yes!
(How can I make the yes blink in seizure inducing colors?)

I often sad laugh at the many newbie posts I see that fret over the exact shape of their PF jars but ignore the PC.
It's possible to grow without one, but knowing your jars are sterile from the start saves effort and money in the long run.
Buy what you can afford, a cheap PC is better than none.

I'd say at least 16qt, that's what I've got and it fit enough jars for what I do.  Others like bigger, others like smaller.  You can get a 6qt that you could fit like 8 PF jars in if you don't feel like shelling out the money now.  I've got two cookers, 16qt Presto for bigger projects, and a 6qt for little projects (and cooking).

I imported a Presto 23 quart PC and I love it. Best $155 I've ever invested.
Do it and you wont look back.

Switch to pint jars, you can usually fit more pint jars in a batch than quart jars.

Just so you know, you're wasting so much money instead of just getting a bigger one.

Alright, you guys have convinced me!
The only store around me that has any big ones in stock is Canadian tire
They have a 16qt one for $120 so I'll pick up that one tomorrow :evil2:

How does this make any type of sense.

It would take just as long to PC the same amount of grains.

It might make sense because if the jars were a little skinnier I'd get 3 in unfortunately I've bout about 20 quart jars already I'm going to buy a bigger pc eventually I'm not wasting money though I rent I don't pay for water or stove just waste massive amounts of time

I can fit five pint jars in my small cooker, compared to only two quart jars.

That is 25% more volume being cooked at one time.

Both of these hold 7 quart jars, but different quantities of pint jars.  (I've been studying up on this topic)

23-quart canner hold 7 1-quart Mason jars, 20 1-pint jars or 24-half pint jars.

16-quart canner hold 7 1-quart Mason jars, 10 1-pint jars or 12-half pint jars.

A 23qt can hold 10 quart jars.

7 on the bottom and 3 on top of them sideways.
