Lab wear
    #18994896 - 10/18/13 10:39 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I have been using the same tyvek lab coat for some time. I am currently looking at material lab coats and was wondering if I'm just better off sticking with the tyvek ones or does using a a white cloth material one and bleach washing then drying enough to keep the coat clean between washings? I don't want the dryer to add lint adn what not to it that is gonna float off the coat lol Also my tyvek one has banded sleeves so i don't need tyvek sleeves adn I'm not able to find a cloth one with the same elastic sleeves. I'd love if anyone knows where to find an affordable one. Also as I look at reordering masks, will these cheap dynarex ones http://www.amazon.com/Dynarex-Medica...=surgical+mask be enough to not only use while workign in front of myflow hood but also to prevent breating oyster spores in my greenhouse? I was thinking maybe for the greenhouse I should order a higher grade one. Also when it comes to shoe covers, Would maybe just buying a cheap pair of lab only shoes maybe be a better choice?  Or would the fact that I'm still taking worn socks and putting them into cleaner shoes still carry things in.  I'm probably over thinking this one as I use a flow hood anyways but I'd like to have a true clean room.  And throughout the day I go from outside back indoors and into my lab.

You need a respirator to protect from spores,  not a surgical mask (which is to protect the patient from your germs) or dust mask (large particle).

I use a small respirator at work for keeping methyl methacrylate exposure to a minimum.  A dust mask might lower exposure to spores, but if you're working with oysters every day, that's still a lot of exposure over time.

Any recomendation on the minimum type or style I should look for?  I don't plan on being around super exposure but I'm sure no matter how early you pick them theres gonna be spores in the air and the occasional missed fruit.  At the same time I don't want to overdo it or spend too much.

You can get away with ones like this:

Keep in mind they won't work if you have a beard.

This is a pretty good, inexpensive ($13.99) respirator.  The P100 particulate filtering facepiece respirator filters at least 99.97% of airborne particles and will protect from oyster spores much better than a surgical mask.  The replacement filters are also inexpensive.

Nice,  that's similar to the one I use at work.

You guys are making me feel as if I'm walking into a nuclear waste site :P  I'm definitely gonna order one of those though.  Last thing I want to do is develop an allergy to something I love!

Just added to my wish list. As much as I order from Amazon I should go ahead and subscribe to prime, just hate dropping $80.

We use these respirators, and they work well. You'll want to replace the filters every few months depending on how often you wear it and what your spore load is.

No shit dude, for $14 that seems like a good buy.  That and I gotta get a damn separate grow room that's not my house!  After seeing what shiitakes can do, I get worried 'cause they're not even notorious for spores!

3m respirators are excellent.  You can get charcoal filters also for chemical work.

They are offering a free month of amazon prime right now I believe.  My 30 days is almost up but i have ordered the hell out of anything and everything this month!  It also includes movie streaming now so if you already netflix or similar you may now just be able to substitute.
