Limmited shiitake grow,
    #18991690 - 10/17/13 04:13 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I've been preparing myself for growing shiitake & oysters for about a month. Problem is I'm am very limited on money (educational reasons). I've been reading Shiitake Tek, Wood lover teks, I don't have bran or sawdust at my disposal, I have UNLIMITED supply of hardwood chips and chicken manure/compost and regular compost. Is there any way I can cultivate with this?

List of things I have: 700+ pounds of hardwood chips
                                  Chicken compost & leaf compost
                                  Coir & verm
                                  Substrate bags
                                  Unlimited garden space
20+ logs (thinking about growing shiitake with them)
p.s
Me and my partner tried to grow some shiitake from the logs but failed, I broke some up and made a patch from it with wood chips and compost.

Shiitake can grow on PF cakes which is simple and doesn't require a lot of materials

sawdust seems to be the go to or log cultivation but the logs need to be freshly cut to ensure nothign else takes hold.  Not sure exactly how fresh.  If you can get straw, aloha medicinals have a good read on their site.  I'm sure you could somehow do a bed of chips.  I did a bed of just sawdust and spawn and it is still putting out fruits.  Never be afraid to experiment as well.  Compost is not needed for shiitake but there are other mushrooms you could look into to put it to use.

Another question, If I grow blocks, Can I leave them outside in a raised bed outside? I can water them every day....

I'm not too knowledgeable on the types of mushrooms that grow on already composted material but I'm pretty sure paddy straw mushrooms is one of them I seen the other day.  My shiitake bed is raised as well as I've just thrown several blocks out along with it.  It started out in a sublevel bed about 6" deep but I eventually transferred it.  When I did mine I put a layer of cardboard under and a layer over til it was fully colonized then removed the cover.  I water them daily as well, sometimes multiple times.

You can grow on wood chips, using the traditional bag method, but you will have slower growth time and more failures because of bag punctures. If you can find access to a small lawn mulcher/chipper and make the chips into a finer material(not quite sawdust) they will grow just fine. We currently grow all of our species on this exact thing.

oh let me add that we do add bran to everything except the shiitake. But that's not really necessary if you understand your yields will be lower and colonizing will be slower.

Thanks for the info, With the bags, I have about 10 large substrate bag I bought, Even if I find the money to buy sawdust, I would not know where to buy, I don't even own a car for that matter.
