ID Request: Trigger warning, I hope this isn't what I think it is...

Backstory: My father is a logger. Even days when he's not working, he spends a lot of the time in the forest--looking for game and what have you. Since he found out I'm really into fungi about two years ago he has taken to bringing finds home from work. I never thought it could be harmful until he brought this home about a year ago and my stomach turned over with the thought this could be an endangered polypore. Can anyone help me ID this, even though it's a year old, and if it is what I think it is, is there any way to get this to a pro who can clone it still? It's pretty dry and crackled at this point.
Habitat: Found in the woods, growing form an old growth Doug Fir stump
Gills: No gills
Stem: Polypore of some kind
Cap: Uhhh...
Spore print color: No print to go off of

definitely reminds me of an Agarikon, Laricifomes officinalis?
not only medicinal, extremely rare, but is also thought to be among the oldest fungi on earth
http://www.ted.com/talks/paul_stamets_on_6_ways_mushrooms_can_save_the_world.html
more detail can be found here, if it is in fact that

Fomitopsis officinalis as Rafiikii said. I know a guy who attempted to grow some from a sample I sent him. I don't know that anyone has ever gotten one to fruit.

Sigh. This is confirming my worst fear, that it is an Agarikon.
The first time I saw it that well-known pic of Stamets popped into my mind.
That's unfortunate, hopefully I can find a professional to clone it, if it's still cloneable as it was picked more than a year ago.
I guess at the very least I can make very powerful medicine with it. Anyone know the best way to make Agarikon extract?

That sounds highly improbable as it would be the new growth that would be worth culturing.
You could probably research on the internet to learn about tinctures and extraction methods with medicinal mushrooms. I've only done Reishi and Turkey Tails but I can't imagine it would be that different for this.
One last thought, if this was picked over a year ago it's probably not good medicine anymore. I would want fresh material for making tinctures.

i'd wager its not as uncommon as its made out to be. i see it all over the place, just take a days walking on the PCT and you'll see a lot of them and its in the coast range and olympics too.

I hope you're right. The guides and Wikipedia have it as "extremely rare" which is why it hurts me so, but perhaps that's a precautionary measure so people don't over harvest it. My understanding is that it needs old growth to fruit in the wild which is why it's "extremely rare" as there is not much left in the PNW at this point.
