How much of a difference does gypsum make?
    #18989478 - 10/17/13 03:11 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

If you were to have 2 identical monotubs with coir and 6pints of spawn, one using gypsum, one using no gypsum, what would the difference be in the two tubs?

Would yield be increased?

Would health of specimens be increased?

Would colonization time increase (this goes for the jars too, like if you put gypsum in your jars to help speed up colonization)?

Would psilocybin content be increased?

Would the shrooms look nicer?

I have read that it raises the ph which trich doesnt like

I have also read that it provides the mushrooms with some type of nutrien or mineral and some claim it makes a better yield or more potent. Not sure if that is actually true or not

Try it and report back, of course you couldnt use spawn from multi-spore, it would have to be an isolate

Gypsum is a funny thing. It is a pH buffer. Meaning it can raise or lower pH in different situations. We use gypsum in bulk substrate for that very reason. As the mycelium consumes a substrate it can become acidic and gypsum helps to maintain pH and keeps it from becoming too acidic. It also provides some beneficial minerals such as calcium.

To really answer your question it helps quite a bit. Use it

I've noticed larger fruits and maybe a 10% increase in yield over just strait coir, but those were MS grows so it could just be genetics. It *should* yield more though as it provides more total nutrients, and a more 'balanced' diet if you will, so unless it gets overtaken by a contaminant by the time you pick all of your flushes I would expect at least some increase in yield, though it might be minor.

By the time I am done with growing I am going to revolutionize mushroom growing! I have so many ideas and nothing but time!life is good!

Aside from the pH stabilizing effect, gypsum supplies calcium and sulfur, both of which are essential elements for good fruit body formation.

How 'much' of an effect depends on how deficient your chosen substrate is in them.

Another benefit is it keeps the substrate loose, allowing air and moisture to penetrate and move freely.

I use gypsum in my grain soaks and the difference for me is that my grains don't stick at all. You can shake the jars like a maraca

Thanks guys.

I guess my next question would be: what else can be added to increase general health of specimens. I am interested in producing the highest quality mushroom possible. I already know about agar and cloning and all that. It just seems like everyone is stuck in a rut here doing the same teks over and over again. There has to be room for change!

What else can we do to increase the quality of our product?

Some ideas of my own:
- Find more nutrients that can be added to our bulk substrates. From what I understand about plants, perhaps phosphorous, and nitrogen.
- Perhaps the implementation of a cold warm regime to emulate natural conditions would have an effect.
- sending daily good vibes to your tubs, look at your shrooms and tell them you love them and want them to grow healthy (i know... lol, but still i heard this can work).

These are just ideas based in very little science though.

Adding nutrients to mushroom substrates beyond a certain point impedes progress and screws things up.

Mushroom mycelium digests dead organic matter.  That's their niche.  Adding 'nutes' as you would for plants slows things down and leads to mutants and other problems.

But through these genetic mutations wouldn't it be possible to find a strain that is unique, and possibly more potent?

Yeah, Penis Envy

And there is one ingredient I know could improve yield/quality, but it will also greatly increase risk of contam, and that is spent coffee grounds. I would not use them until you have several successful grows without contams under your belt. A lot of people won't use them and will deter others from using them. Ever notice how quick your coffee molds if you leave it in the coffee maker?

Not only does gypsum regulate PH levels as the mycelium remove nutrients from the substrate (which can leave it acidic) it also provides calcuim and sulfites to your mooshies.

Will the mycelium fully consume the gypsum or would there be remnants of it left behind? I'm asking because I want to grow medicinal mycelium on brown rice and just have pure mycelium left that I can powder. I was wondering if I could use gypsum to help keep the rice from clumping?

You'll never have pure mycelium left over from a substrate.  Also nice necro bump.

After speaking with fungi perfecti, they told me they produce their medicinal mushroom mycelium by growing it on brown rice and having it the mycelium totally consume the rice so there was nothing left but the mycelium. My real question is does mycelium also consume gypsum or does it just mine it for nutrients?

lol and thanks, I would rather ask on threads that already exist than create a new one that talks about the same stuff.

The mycelium will never fully consume the grain, there will always be some remnants left of the grain itself
