Hi Guys,
Just want to say the info on this site is fantastic so thanks very much, I really am enjoying the learning curve of mushroom growing but I have hit a slight green wall, not sure if my very first attempt at this has been ruined, just wanted some expert views on this matter. I now have mushrooms on my cake but I also have what I think is mould. Do I throw this out (this was more of a test run but I don't really want to die testing them!! lol) or are they ok? There does not seem to be any green on the mycelium but I thought I best ask! Thanks guys!
Dook!

Oh sweet mercy, get that out of your house immediately.
That dusty green beast is Trichoderma mold sporulating like no tomorrow. You'r going to have a heavy spore load in your house for the next while. In the future keep a close eye out for mold and toss any contaminated cakes before the mold matures and spreads like that!
More info on Trich: http://anonym.to/?http://nt.ars-grin.gov/taxadescriptions/keys/TrichodermaIndex.cfm
That looks like it is not Trichoderma longibrachiatum, which is the only toxic variety of Trich I know of. I would harvest those shrooms and dry them, and in the meantime try to attempt to ID the subspecies of Trichoderma and figure out how toxic it is. Myc can absorb toxins from its environment, and IMHO it's always better to be safe than sorry.
That being said, there are members here who have claimed to have eaten fruits from Trich-infested cakes with no problems. Just not my style to take risks with my health ...

I don't think it's Trichoderma but some other green mold. I would finish fruiting those outside if anything.

Not true. They can break down organic toxins but that doesn't involve absorbing them, just releasing enzymes. If you've ever eaten mushrooms from the store there's a good chance you've eaten mushrooms from contaminated substrate because there's no regulations preventing them from being sold.
They can however absorb heavy metals, maybe you're confusing it with that.

Yup, exactly what I'm confusing it with. Thanks K.
