Losing weight
    #18989504 - 10/17/13 03:46 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

First of all I'm not obese or anything, but I want to lose some weight. Since high school began I've always been a bit chubby, never teased or anything at school but always been self conscious. I've tried to diet and exercise before but the dieting part always got away from me. Longest I've lasted on a diet is two weeks, which was long enough to lose a few kg but not long enough to see a difference visually, and then after two weeks I'd just fall off the wagon and start eating junk food at 1am again.

Basically I wanted to ask you shroomers if you've ever completed a diet/weight loss routine? And what helped you get through it and achieve what you wanted to?

My goal is just to lose enough weight to have a flat stomach. Not concerned about getting 6 pack abs or whatever, just want to feel healthier, lighter and more confident.

(Sorry if this post is hard to understand I'm a teeny bit drunk)

High Protein, Low Carb diet, for me at least, is the best way to go when it comes to losing weight.

Squeeze a fresh lemon in your water daily

And avoid carbs (or any large meal) within a few hours of you going to sleep, you will be amazed at the difference this makes.

My usual daily food intake is

Breakfast: Oatmeal with peanut butter, and a banana

Snack: Protein Bar

Lunch: Chicken Salad

Snack: Vegetables, (Brocolli, Cauliflower)

Dinner: Grilled chicken with peppers and onions

That is if my schedule permits this type of plan, but you can switch stuff out, that's just how I successfully lose weight and it has become a daily routine where it doesn't feel like a diet anymore.

Oh and don't forget weight lifting and exercise.

I'd like to lose some weight too, but only because I have a large waistline.  But it isn't fat per se.  It is muscle that doesn't fit on my shoulders and chest.  :smirk:

Stop drinking alcohol if you do.

Look at your consumptions of sugars, fats, and carbs and how you can cut back on these things.

Eat less. Try to train yourself to be more comfortable with feeling a little hungry. It's not that bad.

Exercise more- it's important to find a kind of exercise you really enjoy doing. I think that's more important than what specific type of exercise you do. For me that's martal art training. I do Aikido 4 days a week and that pretty well keeps me fit as a fiddle, but really any martial art training done 3-5 days a week will make a huge difference.

start small too, incorporate stuff slowly but stick with it, i havnt lost any wait yet, but the same stuff in this thread was suggested to me in RL, but it was overwhelming to try everything at once

i saw this video last night which i find really motivating for this type of goal, i posted in a bunch of threads to make sure i stumble across it his morning

Eat small amounts of healthy food, often.  Most people don't eat this way, so count calories at first so you know you aren't overeating.  Be sure to cut excess sugars from your diet.

start a lifting regiment

no cardio necessary

although i agree with this, i had a nutritionist disagree with it, she said its fine to do it, but she dosnt suggest it because lots of people fail at it and end up in a worse habit, then eating three meals of day

she also said half your plate should be veggies(about as much as you can fit in 2 hands) a quarter of your plate should be meat ( the size of a deck of cards)  and a quarter of your plate should be grain

i would eat more then a deck of cards of meat, though i thought id just post what they have taught me ( that was for the 3 meals thing, not sure surving sizes if you do the 6 meals)

Yeah.  It's kinda difficult to do.

As long as he's in a slight caloric deficit and doesn't cram in all of his calories in one or two sittings he should begin losing weight.

I went vegan and lost 4 stone in about 2 months. I went rock climbin a couple times a week and just ate what I want as long as it was vegan. I'm now at a healthy weight and still vegan and my weightloss has levelled off....go vegan for a while as a diet. It's not hard as you can still eat quite a lot.

Healthy smoothie for breakfast everyday, banana, peanut butter, almond milk, honey, multivitamin, 1-2 raw eggs depending how much of other ingredients, raw greens I like kale, you get the picture, that one tastes super good btw

Then go for a little walk/jog around the neighborhood, can do before smoothie as well.

Then do 100 pushups throughout the day, 5x20 is good

This is minimum what I do to stay in shape, if you want to go a step further lift upper body 2-3 times a week and lower 2-3 a week, lower is more important imho
Don't forget core, a quick 5 min core workout every other day is nice

Well, fat lost first, then muscle gain. OP NEEDS fast progress to fuel his motivation.

Also, I doubt muscle eats fat. Fat cells can't disappear, only shrink. They can't transform to muscle either...muscle can grow on top of it though.fat grows on top of muscle:lol:

I'm pretty big and I run a lot  went from 250(middle school) to 117(high school) to 141(today). It took me 2 years to develop the density of muscle I have today...it's a long process, but well worth it.

Genetically speaking, your body has a preset amount if muscle you can grow per year. Each person is different. Getting lean is a fun challenge if one is persistent

Not literally eats dude.

Muscle mass requires energy to be sustained.  Building muscle increases metabolism.  Energy (calories he is consuming) will be less likely to fatten OP.

And, did you just say muscle grows on top of fat?  :wtf:

Language is relative. In my head, I thought muscle eating fat was associated with fat turning into muscle. Fat is eaten, and turned into muscle...in a sense, but through energy burned, not cell transformation.

Sorry for misinterpreting your words. Reading comprehension may not be my strongest skill, but I honestly try to read and understand. I'm a dedicated pothead though..so yea:awehigh:

Darkest, you speak truth toward your claim. Thanks for letting me know I need more time to read sentences before post ing. I'll take that into consideration in the future.

1) Drink only water.
2) Eliminate starches & sugars.
3) Cardiovascular exercise everyday.

#3 is as simple as walking outside for 1 hour every morning or evening. It may look overly simplified, but that is because weight loss is. It doesn't require highly complex diets, brutal workout regimes that take 4 hours a day or any of that crap. Follow these steps, and you will reach your weight loss goal.

I just cut out soda and junk foods, including highly processed foods (basically lived on TV dinners and fried food before hand). I lost like 30 pounds and went from 38-40 size pants down to 33-34. Haven't been this small since about 15 or so.

Nothing really 'helped', I was just determined.

Currently working on one that is working fantastically for me  I too was not huge but chubby enough to unhappy with my weight. I've tried to lose weight multiple times but it always ended up falling apart.
I started with a detox in June to kick start my metabolism, along with at home strength training on Mon, Wed, Fri. Sit-up, push-up squats and an hour of cardio Tue and Thu. I've cut down portion size and am drinking a shit ton of water lol like 6 or 7 16oz glasses. I'm a sucker for sweets so I cut way down, no more coffee  (cuz i take mine with cream and lots of sugar) I've lost about 10 pounds since june, which doesn't seem like very much but I've gained a lot of muscle. I've been dropping inches like crazy though.
The hardest part for me I think was keep my routine and telling myself it's ok to slip up or treat your self cuz if your miserable losing weight it's soooo much harder.

Hope that helps if you want more details or even to see my before and now pics I'd be happy to help ya out just PM me.

You know, sometimes I wonder why people still ask questions about losing weight. The answer has been given a billion times by science, magazines, experts, etc, etc.

The summary of every single study made was: Eat better, move more.

So here's my advice to people who want to lose weight:

- Eat better
- Move more

The most important thing I can tell you is this; it's practically impossible to gain a flat stomach through diet alone, unless you starve yourself unseemingly skinny. You need to exercise in order to get the look you want.

Eat breakfast. I can't stress that enough. The word basically says it, you're breaking the fast you had when you slept. A lot of people do the opposite, thinking it will help them lose weight, when in fact, all you're doing is sending your body into starvation mode. You'll store more fat and lose muscle. I usually don't have much time after waking up to eat anything, so I opt for a protein drink instead and enjoy it as I'm heading to work. They work pretty well, I have loads of energy and they help me focus.

I've noticed people always mention eating less, or eating certain things, but in my personal experience, it's much more than that. It's when you eat it, and how you eat it. Eating a good meal, for me, usually takes at least a half hour. I am not kidding. I know that's probably unheard of for most people, but I've been eating this way for many years now and I've lost weight every single year that I've done it. Dinner is always when I eat the least amount of food. Sometimes I skip it altogether. I'll usually go for something small, a snack or a serving of fruit. As your day dies down, try to eat less. But also, very important, eat throughout the day, try to keep your blood sugar levels steady.

There isn't an exercise routine that I follow, as it's not really necessary. Both my jobs are pretty physical, I'm constantly moving and stretching, so they keep me in shape. The muscle mass in my arms has increased so much these past few years, it's quite amazing. I wouldn't say I'm skinny, or even healthy (I eat tons of crap I know I shouldn't), but I am happy with my weight. I was thrilled when I saw the number on the scale the last time I weighed myself. I haven't weighed that little since I was in middle school!

Bottom line, diets don't work, OP. To really lose weight and keep it off, you need to make a lifestyle change. It's the only way. Don't let it stress you out too much though, there's nothing wrong with having a bit of fat. I still have lots of fat that I wouldn't mind getting rid of, but then I really think about it, and I come to the conclusion that I really don't mind it. I needn't compare myself to other women who are much thinner than me to feel good about myself. They're not me, they have their own path, just as I have mine.

Anyway, best of luck to you.

Intense cardio workouts are counterproductive to building muscle mass.

How about just a balanced workout regimen? Cardio some days, muscle gain on others.

I like the feeling of endurance....I surprise myself how long I can go running sometimes. And i get intense satisfaction after eating a good meal afterward :awehigh: not very strong though. I only lift 25lb curls.

Weight loss is all mental! Get in a good mind set and start to eat healthy. Once you get in the groove, nothing can stop you.

Always exercise. Get in a weight lifting routine. Muscle-growth pumps up your metabolism and makes you feel better via endorphin release.

Good vibes your way!

Losing weight is simple.

Calories in vs calories burned.

If your burn more calories than you take in you will lose weight.

Replace all the food that is processed with any fruits or vegetables. You want to make your calorie intake less than your calories used, 3500 calories = 1 pound

You obviously have never tried losing weight. For a lot of people, food isnt just something they like. It's hard to control urges and hormones. Sure, the math says that you need to burn more calories than consumed, but a lot goes into that. You just dont get it if you haven't been in the situation;

One coca-cola is 240 calories, there are 3500 calories in a pound, 3500/14.583 bottles of coca cola per pound of fat. You want to gain 20 pounds so 14.583*20= 291.66 weeks of drinking one bottle of coca cola per week above your normal dietary requirements to gain 20 pounds of fat. There are 52.117 weeks per year so I was wrong you actually need to add (291.66/52.117) 5.59 bottles of coca cola per week to gain 20 pounds in one year, less than one coke per day.

Well that sort of works then. But that is unhealty weight.
Plus you need to make sure your ingesting your required caloric intake according to your BMI and then some on an every day basis in order for the once a day coca cola to add any sufficient fat to the body.
