Do you experience ASMR?
    #18987818 - 10/16/13 07:31 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I was listening to a song a friend showed me and it gave me what I called chills/goosebumps/tingling down my spine and I wanted to tell them that but didn't know the name for it. I did some searching and found the term "musicgasm" but looked further and eventually found this article about a sensation called "ASMR", short for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.

I thought everyone experienced this and I was surprised to learn that it's apparently not that common.. I get it mostly from music, Pink Floyd often gives me it almost as if on command during the soft melodic parts and guitar solos (part of why I love them so much). I also get it from other things like head massages/hair washing at hair dressers and intimacy etc.. Some of the videos in that article actually trigger it too but only briefly and nothing as intense as from music. Apparently some people can trigger it just by thought/will; I wish I could because I absolutely love the feeling.

Who else experiences this? What triggers it for you?

I actually found that I didn't really experience it much (or maybe just didnt pay attention, I don't really have any memories of it before this time in my life though) until I did lot of binging on MDMA (among other things like shrooms) for a while, almost lost the magic but found that afterwards music has always been much more emotionally moving to me and triggers it way more often.. Although that might just have to do with me opening up more emotionally.

I haven't really found any that work that well, one or 2 gave me 5 quick waves in he beginning but then nothing after that. Music seems to work better for me I guess

I also find that I cant trigger it from the same stimulus within a couple day period. For example if I listen to a song and get it a from that, I wont get any tingling/ASMR from that particular song anymore, for the next few days at least; Or if I do its much diminished.

I didn't realize this was a thing until another thread talked about it, and how it can be triggered by watching people do certain things and I recalled that it would happen sometimes in class or even when have to sit through a church service.

There are a bunch of videos on YouTube that do it for me (I generally have to use headphones for it to work). In particular, people tapping on things, playing with paper or plastic wrapping or speaking softly in a foreign language do it for me.

These videos are kinda creepy, but if you can get past the weirdness factor, they really do work for me. This one has a bunch of different triggers to try.

What's kinda cool is I can sometimes induce it just by thinking about things that have triggered it. Last time I had it happen was a couple weeks ago. I was in a courtroom for a traffic thing (my case was dismissed) and watching the judge rendering judgments did it for me.

Music, beauty/awesomeness, excitement, and love all cause it for me. Memories of any of those, too. Sometimes food which is excitement.

Gotta love free rushes of dopamine and serotonin

Same here.  When I was little I would try to describe it and people were always like :wtf:

It can be extremely frustrating to try and describe the sensation to someone who doesn't feel it, especially when you're assuming they know what you're talking about in the first place.

It's somewhat like there is a very gentle breeze blowing on the hairs on the back of your head and neck. Then that sensation radiates down your back and to your arms and legs and over top of your scalp,

Strangely, this thread must have primed me for some good ASMRing because it hit me about a minute into this tune, just as Gilmour starts singing.

I got some now, and earlier when first reading this thread and thinking about it.

It's hard to describe, but doesn't feel unusual at all. Might even give you deja-vu back to the last time it happened. That's the case for me lately, mostly because of the season.

It feels good, it feels happy, it feels right.
Every drug I enjoy gives me a sense of this same feeling, but so does every day stuff like I mentioned in my original post.

Very interesting find, OP. I had no idea there was a term for this sort of thing. I listen to music daily, I couldn't imagine not doing so, and very frequently I get the chills and goosebumps you speak of. It's especially potent if I'm listening to music with my headphones, or in the car, as the sound system is excellent and I can really feel the sub-bass sometimes. There are certain tracks that I play that give me such energy, even if they're not necessarily what you would call a joyful, or even positive, piece of music. I guess it's all subjective, though. I remember the first time I heard a track from a French producer, Gesaffelstein, called Opr.

I thought it was incredible, but then upon hearing it for the first time with the music completely surrounding me, it truly was like an audible orgasm. I remember playing it in the car for some co-workers of mine, and one of them mentioned how it made him feel like fighting. Now, I wouldn't say I feel like fighting when I hear it, but I totally understand where he's coming from. It's a powerful track. Another song with a similar vibe for me would be One Hundred Years by The Cure.

Even hearing just the intro, with that drum machine, can induce a very strong and visceral response from me. Music never fails to amaze me.

Its like that scene in pulp fiction when John Travolta sniffs that powder and is driving down the highway.

I get that when I'm in a good mood and everything looks and sounds good, but I can feel it in my brain. It never happened to me before I took E, but I don't smoke pot anymore. I like twitch and shit sometimes lol

Certainly everyone gets goosebumps from intense emotion or feelgood stimuli, whatever they are. This is something specific though, right? Like people get it from the sound of balloons rubbing and shit? Yeah, I don't think I have that.

Morphin time just reminded me that I've recently discovered that a lot of music by James Holden sets my ASMR off big time. Honestly, it's almost insane how intense it is - like I'm going to pass out. As best as I can figure, it is the way he uses stereo and very delicate vocals. I dunno. It's pretty insane for me with a set of headphones on.

Here are a couple of tracks. A couple remixes of "Nothing" first

And "Janeiro"
