alcoholics, a waisted life? * 1
    #18988734 - 10/16/13 10:27 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

My uncle used to tell me this all the time, he was an alcoholic for his whole life and said anyone who he's met that also drank for long periods of time have bad anger issues and just dull and almost brain dead. He knew what he was talking about what y'all think?

I think its a waisted life an pointless life and worthless life unless they become clean.

He also said a alcoholic bum in the street is no different then one with a home, they don't take baths, brush their teeth, or even look presentable most of the time. They always smell like trash and find excuses for their drinking.  They can have serious health issues caused by drinking yet still drunk. Its really no different than impure desomorphine rotting skin off the body

Also how is it socially acceptable when they use up funds and cause issues wherever they are due to terrible coping skills? I GREW up with them around me so I know better then most about how they are.  Also cause lots of car accidents while drinking and they feel no regret when doing it when driving a moving weapon.

Drinking in the mornings before 6am with a flat beer by their bedside.

Never said that, but its pretty accurate.  Almost all pot smokers commit no other crime other than smoking weed so I guess its pretty true.

That could also be true, but at least they keep good care of themselves, and are not a burden on society or even engage in more violent behavior either verbally or physically because they are mentally weak.

Huh, if you say so. In my experience they don't take care of themselves in the ways that count (only superficially for social status), are a violent burden on society pressing their soberness on everyone else, and are too mentally inept to see through it.

Wasn't joking, sober life is wasted life

Personally, I think they're truly is a difference between a general weed smoker and a so-called pothead.  I've met many people that literally spend all their time and fun smoking weed and are the stereotypical sit on the couch and stare at the TV screen their whole life.  All drugs can be abused in some way if you "try" hard enough.

Both good points you two.

But I haven't met a single alcoholic (I go to bars all the time to shoot pool) and they all say the same thing and that's "I start my dad with a bit of gin(or whatever they.choose) then have 3 beers every hour or so untill night time when I get shit faced" and they seem to all have that smell.

There are extreme alcoholics who can't function, many of them enjoy it (Bukowski) many do not.

For men, heavy drinking is typically defined as consuming an average of more than 2 drinks per day, or more than 14 drinks per week. For women, heavy drinking is typically defined as consuming an average of more than 1 drink per day, or more than 7 drinks per week.

I easily fall well into that category and it shows, but aside from people knowing that I drink there hasn't been any issues so far. Had an acquaintance who would drink 2+ dozen beers a day, that guy was a nutcase but hell its his life.

Some people just aren't going to take care of themselves drunk, sober, high, speeding or whatever. They just don't care. I think those people are also the types to be more likely to get addicted to whatever various substance, alcohol just happens to be the most readily available and most socially acceptable.

LULZ, in that case my ex-wife is a heavy drinker and she got pissed when I called her an alcoholic. She was probably as mad she couldn't throw pothead back in my face and it matter a single bit to me. I embrace my potheadedness and truthfully revel in it. Okay well revel isn't the right word exactly as I tend to keep it on the downlow due to its legal status where I am, but for those that know me well, I have no issues with my love of cannabis being known.

I was an alcoholic for two years. I groomed myself, worked, rented a living place, and was very liked by people.

Alcohol added on top of a shitty person makes them shittier. If you are capable of living with it, go for it.

Oh ok, because I've only never met anyone who, Can can control their drinking.  Actually one Guy I did but it was because he was about to have a kid. But it just seems like. Most are brain dead to an extent. Doesn't mean some aren't great guys but you have some that have as many brain cells as a dry sponge and are overly aggressive morons to an extent.

I always give the benefit of the doubt to anyone I meet but alcoholics just seem all the same.

Well my personal experience is hardly a defining factor in objective reality, but I've known hundreds of heavy drinkers and only a small handful who were really messed up on alcohol (rather they used alcohol to justify their messed up states of mind, such as the guy I mentioned above who went from meth to very-very heavy drinking :crazy2:)

All in all I don't agree with the premise

If you use alcohol and drive in any BAC your a fuck up and dick.  Lady's I worked with would have vodka in mountain dew glasses while working and have beer and ice in their car when they got off work though they lived only a few miles away from work. I almost got into two wrecks because an alcoholic driver those POS

I'm not bothering fixing my sentences on a sucky phone. But good job with the fundemental attribution errors  if I can read it an so can others nothing is wrong with it.

Ya its healthy and IME I've seen much less issues arise from smoking pot. No one I know will pan handle (bitch begging) for a handle of gin. I never seen anyone get into a fight after drinking or beating someone they "loved"  they are two drugs on two different levels.

Generalizing is saying, all of em, I've said most and in my experience.  Not a generalization at all. Also yes mild stereotyping going on but its not because I'm also saying most or from what I've seen. You may need to see how those words should actually be used.

And sir, you make a good observation, but I have never seen it for myself. Since I know your a smart Guy based on your posts I've read, I accept your observation.  Most other people respond as an asshole so I respond the same a trait you don't have one but. Therefore I have much respect.

We're all guilty of stereotyping at some point, man. Every drug has some burnt out loser sitting in their own shit next to a dumpster, it happens. Then you've got just as many users in society who are active and in good health that use their brain and talents. It's just that you don't see them all the time. Same thing for video gamers, tv addicts and Internet addicts. Some of em don't shower daily and sit around like disgusting gluttonous pigs. That's just the heart of some people. Drugs would definitely bring it out in some people quicker than if they were sober sorta like a mental illness except they have choices however with their lowered inhibitions and euphoria, they are content to lower there standards and live outside a the normal where as addicts of things besides drugs tend to still have most of their inhibitions which is why their on a couch instead of by a dumpster. It's the same thing really, just a state of sober addiction vs lowed inhibition addiction to euphoria.

Some people just need to get hobbies or jobs or families to feel anything for this life.

True.  I see your point I guess. But I'm sick of all the violence that comes with alcohol. Its not right people use it as an excuse for childish behavior.

it's one thing to drink too much on rare occasion, but people who intentionally get too fucked time after time can't blame it on the alcohol because they know what they are doing when they decide to drink so much.

same thing goes with any other drug, its just more obvious with alcohol because its socially acceptable. if there were opium dens instead of bars, this thread would be about opium.

the thing with illegal drugs is people have to be discreet or they end up in jail quickly, unless its at home. so obviously its not something people see often.

on a side note, it is definitely a fact that alcoholism is far unhealthier than smoking weed. but in my understanding this thread is more based on the social aspect of the too addictions than long term health, so saying one is healthier than another is beating a dead horse because people still "waste their life" with a cannabis addiction in the same way as alcohol addiction.
i have gotten irrational while drunk on a few occasions, and reacted by limiting my alcohol consumption. if people don't react then they are irrational in a sober state because you decide to drink and how much to drink before you start.

Ya it was more about the social aspect.  But the health problems can expand into social issues by violence from brain damage and withdrawal can as well.

And ya I kinda decide how much I drink before I start. I say "no more than 3" but ill usually stop at 1 or two.

idk if there is definitive connection with violence caused from brain damage from alcohol. but if that is a fact, depending on how many people it actually effects, then it does disrupt society. i think that would be pretty hard to prove rather than just having a correlation.

I don't think alcohol causes violence, I think it brings out the emotions which when your inhibitions are lowered, you tend to act more on your impulses.

I think any kind of of drug addiction limits potential. The term "wasted" is pretty subjective though (except in this case cause its quite literal  :drumming: ) But general speaking, I think any time you stick to one repetitive task you lose sight of all the possibilities in your life. Physical health aside, I don't think it's much worse than constantly being absorbed in the tv or your smart phone or your job or any of that. Each of those make you equally dull and will drive depression and poor personal upkeep.

In fact I have a bigger problem with Internet addiction that drug addiction and if anything is limiting my potential, it's the amount of time I sit here rereading the same threads, hoping something interesting will come up rather than enjoying a hike, a nice article on something novel and informative, painting, or a guitar session

Plenty of great writers, musicians, political leaders etc. have been heavy drinkers. They may not have been very happy or healthy necessarily, but they did get some shit done in their lifetimes that had a lasting impact on humanity. Did those people waste their lives? Depends who you ask.

Alcoholism definitely takes something away from you (other than your physical health).

It dulls emotion a lot.

I remember when I stopped drinking for a month. I became emotional like a little girl...

There are many highly functional and successful heavy drinkers/alcoholics.

They are doctors, nurses, executives, lawyers, and business owners. They have families, education, and they take care of themselves both physically and financially.

OP, maybe your uncle was a person who couldn't succeed in life, and he is now very bitter, and maybe drinking was part of HIS issue, but it doesn't hold everyone back.

Weed has never made me stop, or forget to take care of myself. Amphetamines have, and im sure alcohol and many other addictions could as well. weed may be addicting, but it is nowhere near as detrimental as the harder drugs.

Alcoholics are just people whom use a vice, its like any vice if you allow it to control your life that was your own problem. You had to be able to waver between the decision of continuing to drink or refraining from taking a sip, you might wish to refrain from ever drinking another beer in your life if someone informs you that they wish to persuade you to quit drinking. They wouldn't persuade you in a way that would make you feel it was a demand, it was just  a friendly gesture to impart the foreknowledge that by drinking you'd destroy your life. But since I was such a good hearted person I felt obligated to help my friend through a drinking problem.

He started drinking when he was much younger than he is now, he started drinking when he was still relatively out of Chicago, since he started drinking after he left Chicago, and he didn't start drinking til he turned 15. When he first told us that he was moving to Chicago we were bewildered because he had moved to New York a few years before and we thought he would have wished to stay there.

For he wished to go back to Chicago after he came back to New York a few years later, its much too long ago even to remember what he meant when he said that he was planning on finding a store where he could purchase an toy for his wife. He purchased his wife a very fancy toy which she rejoiced in, quite delighted by its unexpected association with former roots of persons, sort of, as if he had lived in that persons lives at one point or another. He could become an entirely different person by focusing his center to follow a different vortex, a vortex which he was unable to discern how he could arrive into a separate galaxy, a galaxy that didn't consist of the normal laws of motion and such.

I wouldn't say that all drinkers are just dull and worthless, in general though I feel many may come off that way, but perhaps they have just taken it to a different road from previous associations with other avenues, because they might get offered the chance to become joined with a force that wasn't the drinkers own, he could resist the temptation to continue to reinforce his action of drinking, he would persist in all endeavors to recall all his last drinks and wish for them to return.

The urge to drink couldn't be suppressed, so indeed, he couldn't stop himself from engaging in drinking. Usually his friends would ask him to stop drinking, to put down the bottle and let it all go, but they wouldn't get his attention for he would direct it to something other that didn't involve him. It would actually be about someone completely unlike him in everyway possible, so any claims of him belonging to any groups would be incorrect.

He had a small group he drank with in Canada. They all drank after they came back from this show, a show that never happened because it was changed at the last minute. So instead we decided to make plans to visit my uncle, whom was closeby and wanted to invite me to go to the next play, which would be held the next day.

I actually didn't even want to go to this play at first, I felt as if my grandmother forced me to attend this play, something about her made me feel the need to go to this play, so I went.

In the past I may have resigned the action of attending the play, since, in some ways I would rather be at home than watch a play that I wasn't associated with. Though this play I heard earlier was about a person whom finds himself in the mind of someone other than himself, he sees himself in the mind of someone that isn't him, but this person seems to know how he deals with things.

In any case he usually doesn't know anyone is entering into his thoughts, and if someone asks him to reveal his thoughts he usually will decide not to. For not everyone was worthy of hearing his thoughts on account of the prophetic vision embued in each line he uttered, which naturally, was only held for persons of interest.
