Does this WBS look good to you guys?
    #18987933 - 10/16/13 07:59 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

First time I've prepared and noced WBS. I noticed a very small amount of water content after shooting 2cc's in each jar (obviously, I just don't know if its normal). Btw I am using a MS syringe.

I took someone's advice and rotated the jars over the course of today and it seems like the water has already absorbed mostly into the WBS. However, I'd like your opinion on the photos.

Second question. Did I possibly screw anything up by rotating the jars today? I didn't violently shake them or anything lol. Just carefully rotating to get the moisture across the WBS.

Thanks All!

JAR A

JAR B

Note: on Jar B it looks like there is "standing" water in the bottom of the jar. However, it doesn't really move when I tip the jar to the side. It's not like a flood in there.. I just think its a little damp and the WBS is pressing against the glass there more than any other spot in the jar since all the weight is on top. I think the photo exaggerates this a little. Not sure tho...

Anyway just kinda need your advice and guidance on this one since its all brand new.

Thanks for Frank for his WBS Tek on this one.

I might mention that these are QT size jars.

As long as the outside of the grains were dry when you loaded them into the jars you should be good to go.  They look a bit wet, but I have had many dry grains look wet after PC'ing them but still have everything work out just fine.  How long did you PC by the way?

Rotating them like you did should not cause any problems.  Shaking would have possibly messed things up by moving all the spores around the jar and minimizing the chances for them to germinate.

So far it looks like you are off to a good start.  Keep us updated and keep on going through posts to learn learn learn.  Using a MS syringe with WBS usually takes a while so be patient.

Thanks for the reply.

I PC'd for 90 minutes after pressure was built up in the PC @ 15psi.

I will definitely keep everyone up-to-date as this goes forward. The MS syringe was my easiest option ATM since I don't have any tissue or LC to use.

About how long should it take to see signs of growth approx? (I know there are thousands of factors that play into this)

Also, The WBS was dry. Maybe a couple grains would stick to my hand if I put my palm into the colander. RR's paper towel method passed as well as some other methods I found to test the moisture.

I waited close to 2 hours I believe. Maybe a little less.

I also waited 30 hours after PC before noccing just to give everything a chance to settle down, cool, etc..

I waited about 2 hours for the WBS to dry. Before putting the WBS into jars and proceeding with PC'n.

Incidentally, that doesn't look like WBS but millet/sorghum. Not that this should pose a problem, in fact its probably better

2cc is quite a bit, I would use less next time. Half a cc is lots. They look alright tho, I've seen worse do ok.

Thats a cool mix. WBS in my country contains many other grains. Millet, sunflower seed, wheat, oats, sometimes corn.

Awesome, I've made note to dry even more and will use less spore solution next time. More CCs means more jars

This had some sunflower seeds and cracked corn pieces. Spent a while getting all that crap outta there... The best I could anyway..

But there wasn't much. All the sunflower seeds are gone, but some pieces of cracked corn are hard to get out.

Bear in mind you can do grain to grain transfers, so you wont need that syringe again for dozens of new jars

Paul Stamet's rule of thumb is that 1 jar can knock up 10 new jars, and those 10 will knock up 100 jars.

Was thinking about trying Rye Berries next. I found a supplier on Amazon that is selling 25lbs for for about $25 shipped.

That's cheaper than the WBS!!
