The WONDERS of using a propane torch!

I was reading around last week and stumbled upon something in the agar section about using a propane torch for sterilization.
I wondered how I could have let this slip my mind all this time... considering I've just been using a plain Bic. and that I've had one laying around this whole time, for my oil rig.
So, this morning I gave it a shot and I was WOWed at how simple it just became to heat sterilize a syringe between jar innoculations.
Recently, I have been half-assing when it came to flame sterilization of the syringe. I was sterilizing every 2 or 3 jars... and sometimes even 4 if I was too stoned to remember if I'd done the third jar, yet.
When I was using a regular lighter it would take like 30 seconds to get just the tip red... when I used the propane torch, almost the entire needle was red hot in less than 5 seconds! It was so easy I would feel guilty if I didn't flame sterilize between each jar!
I've had this thing laying around my house for longer than I've been involved here, and anyone who dabs regularly will probably have one, too.
For those of you concerned about cost, it's really not bad at all considering what you're getting. You don't need the mack-daddy torch or anything, propane's gonna burn with a spark.. Home depot or Lowes is where I got mine, this is the exact one I have, and the re-fills are cheap, too. The nice thing about this particular one is you don't have to use a lighter in conjunction with the torch; the trigger on the handle is the spark. Ultra-convenient.
I'm telling you... this shit is the bees knees! Try it and you will never go back to using a bic!

Yeah, I love torches for this kind of work. The biggest thing you have to watch for (especially if you're stoned) is not to just jam your hands in there wave them all around lining up your jars. I didn't have a torch until BHO started coming to my area and I was just like , why did I not think of this sooner?
I have a butane torch but it makes no difference really, just get one you can turn on and either keep going, or is easy to spark with one hand because taking both hands out of the box will cause a lot of air disturbance when you put them back in.

I like this idea a lot.
The idea of making an alcohol lamp always seemed dumb to me. This is a great alternative. Those things last foreverrr

IMO, Just buy a micro-torch from a headshop for 20$ so you don't have a huge soldering torch creating it's own air currents from the massive convection currents it will generate while it burns. Even on it's lowest setting a propane torch is quite overkill.

Almost every time i inoculate i always have someone hold the torch for me and usually keep it on low and just turn it up a little when i wanna heat my needle. So i dont disturb the air to much. Also you gotta remember the flame is a lot bigger and you gotta make sure you let it cool off. And usually i hear a little popping noises and thats just the spores being burn so i always squirt a little solution out after it cools a little and before i inject. I also use the same torch for my rig too. Shits like 4$ at lowes. Its a blue torch. Sick haha

that makes sense.
Can't have any of those dastardly air currents :kingkranky:

Thanks, I can't say that I came up with the idea by any means. My main objective with this thread is just to spread the word and make sure people know of all the resources at their disposal. Yeah, they do last for ages!

This is what I did, works like a dream. If you're in Canada, you can pick one up at Canadiantire for like $10

What? Basically, don't jam your arms in your holes and wave them around and start disturbing all the still air.

IME micro-torches are pieces of shit. I bought one of those at first, thinking why spent THAT MUCH money on a "bulky, overkill" torch like the one mentioned in the OP?
Well, here's my old hand-held torch. It took me about 15 minuntes to find where it was to give you an idea of how often I use this thing.

A solid waste of $25. And that big bulky torch I thought would be so expensive? Also 25 dollars. IME, don't waste your money.

Ohh, you're talking about working in a SAB. I work in a small closet with the entrance sealed shut after I enter. The closet has no air vent, and the air inside is "perfectly still" under the conditions. SAB's are a pain, lol.

sounds like common sense
Literally guys, please try to refrain from flapping your arms like a bird while doing work in a still air box or flow hood. I hear it can disturb your projects

Just because it is "common knowledge" doesn't mean everybody has "common intelligence," as seen on this board every day

I sterilize my syringes in the exhaust of my de-milled F-4 phantom in the backyard. Afterburner works good.

Better still is a chef's torch as they ignite themselves (using one hand) in the UK they're round £5 (cheaper on eBay) and run on butane (lighter gas).
-------------------- A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Is this sarcastic? An exaggerated metaphor implying the propane is overkill?

I would agree, as long as it is high quality. Someone suggested a micro torch and I've already tried those to no avail; is that what you're referring to?
I've been reading around for a little while and propane/butane aren't that much different at all. There is a bunch of techincal jargon I could copy and paste, but I won't.
What I take away is that propane burns very slightly hotter, and propane is also more viable at cold temperatures (like 0oC).
Any discussion of butane vs propane can be squashed, they are relatively interchangeable.
