I been throwing up the idea of growing bulk for sometime now.Been doing verm+brf cakes for awhile and got it down to a T. I went to my local Lowes for some supplies and came across a mushroom compost in a 40lb bag. Its called Mushroom Compost all Natural Organic Soil Conditioner. It Contains.... Wheat Straw Fibrous Peat Gypsum Dolomite Crushed Feathers Cottonseed Meal Peanut Meal and other nutritious ingredients
Will this be a good bulk substrate? 40Lbs for $3.00 not bad.
I have 24 1/2pint jars at about 90% done and want to grow bulk so I need to get this figured out within the next week or so.
So here's what im not sure about!
Do I have to pasteurize my Mushroom Compost? if so how do I go about it?
If im not mistaken when I transfer my cakes to my bulk substrate I have to be very sanitary correct?
How many cakes should I use to colonize my bulk substrate? How small do I beak the cakes up? Im gonna use a 54qt clear tub the base of the tub is about 20in long and 12in wide.
If you don't mind could you guys lead me to a good tek for bulk so I can make a good fruiting chamber and make sure I get the right FAE and so forth.. Like I said im new to bulk so I need to get all the knowledge I can before I give it a go.. Thank you!!

The mushroom compost they sell is a compost that is spent and that mushrooms have already grown on and takin up all the nutrients they need. It will not grow mushrooms.

I don't know if the substrate is going to work but to answer your other questions yes pasturise your substrate. If your substrate is properly pasteurized and your spawn is 100 percent colonized no you don't need sterilize conditions I just put gloves on and mix it on my kitchen table. Either you used the word cakes incorrectly or your planing on shredding up pf cakes and mixing it up with your bulk substrate if your planing on doing that don't. You want your spawn to be a quart jar of some type of grain. I use birdseed the link I will give you also uses birdseed. I am new to bulk myself but I think the forum concencus nowadays is the user frank Horgans teks for how he does things are very thorough and up to date covering everything you need. They also use Bird seed as spawn spawned to bulk in a monotub with a substrate of coco coir vermiculite that's been pasturised. I just did my first one got almost 6 ounces off the first flush. Very low maintenance no misting and fanning. Here's a link http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17897163#17897163. It covers everything I supposes you can use the stuff you found as a substrate could be wrong but that should cover all your other questions.
