(bulk coir shopping)

So I generally use about 1300 grams (2 bricks) of coir when I make my tubs, I'm wondering of those that find the every 3 day trip to petco/petsmart tiresome, where do you find the best deal on bulk coir (coir bales or what have you) and if It's compressed, how you go about chopping away a suitable amount?

When I use coir, I like to get the big bags that are not compressed. I go to a small, local pet store and I simply asked the owner to order me x number of bags when I go in.

I buy the 5kg (11 lbs)CocoTek bricks for $11 from a non-sponsor online.
I usually order like 5-6 at a time....they make about 8 650g bricks each.

I had to fight my standard 650g brick of coir just to break it in half. It was rock hard, and I feared for my fingers while going at it with brute force with a knife.

To split bricks take a hammer and screwdriver, turn it on its side and split it. After its halved you can usually break it up more by hand.

The times I've had used bricks, I put hot water in the bottom of a tub and it breaks away easily then. Just a few inches of water, but if you use too much, when you add the verm it should balance out.

You can also use the drill you drill holes in the lids to drill into the big bricks and they break apart real quick.

I tried cutting against the fibers. Really hard. Does it break off in flakes after you've split it? I managed to cut mine in half, give or take, but still found it hard to break off small pieces to make it more even 50/50 split.

No it usually splits straight in half. Then you can kinda twist to break off half dollar sized chunks.
