Habitat: Found growing under a long needled-pine tree of some sort. They was growing from the soil or decayed pine needles.
Gills: Color is a soft purple with lighter gill edges. I don't think they were attached to the stem.
Stem: Length ~3", diameter ~1", Color was a darker purple with light colored fibers toward the outside, texture was firm, solid, and thick, very bulbous bade.
Cap: Diameter 5-6", color was light purple, texture was solid and firm, spherical.
Smelled strong of fungus.

Looks right to me.
But really don't take my word on this one. I have never found them.

That's what I would call it. Print it if you have some doubt.

Hi OP, hopefully you have found a blewitt but I think you might need some better lit and color corrected photos. Blewitts should be farily blue-purplish throughout and the cap should be very smooth and almost feel like skin.
Like somebody suggested, take a spore print. I checked out the wiki, it has good characteristics to look for: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clitocybe_nuda
I found some blewitts last year on a Golden Gate park foray and some hunting pro's helped me positively i.d. them. I cooked them up and they were delicious. I am looking forward to finding them again this winter.
Peace and good hunting!

Yeah, you tell this noob what's what. He is always making bad ID requests.
For reals though. I hope to find them this year myself. I have never eaten them.

You have a yard. If you find them, they culture outdoors easily. I've had them come up in my compost just from throwing trimmings out.
I love blewits. I especially love the way they smell when fresh.
Maynard: like fungus? Just like that? There are so many rich smells produced by so many fungi. Pay attention to them; some of them are wonderful and you don't want to miss out. Blewits have a wonderful fruity citrus over P. ostreatus scent.
--------------------
Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I was just looking into this, and damn is it just me or does it it seem impossible to know what species of purplish Clitocybe you have, with Clitocybe Saeva, C. glaucocana, C. sordida(tarda) and C. Nuda being so close macroscopically. It boggles the mind.

I think it is one of those things that when you have seen them all you can't not know it.
