Over incubated lions mane spawn * 1
    #18980214 - 10/15/13 06:54 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all, I have some serious concern over spawn I received lately.  I've been making my own spawn for quite some time, and the Lions mane seems to be tricky in that I need to used it quickly or refrigerate it when its barely colonized to avoid fruiting in the bag.

So I recently expanded my operation and ordered 160 lbs of lions mane from Aloha.  When It was delivered (by refrigerated truck) every single one of my bags had fruited.  It looks like the spawn had colonized for about 5 weeks before it was shipped.  I'm looking at half the bags covered 40-80% with fruit, the other half have multiple quarter sized fruits.

When I contacted Dr Turra, he said to go ahead and use it and it will be fine, just don't inoculate with any of the fruit.  He said they cannot refrigerate the spawn until it is FULLY colonized, but to me full colonization of hericium is more like a light mycelium fully covering the grain, not a thick mycelial mat fully encompassing the entire bag. Well once I break up a ten lb bag with a pound or so of fruit there will be broken up pieces spread throughout the bag!  The moment I saw this I figured that all of it is unusable, and was shipped that way.  He had previously mentioned that on my next order they would get the timing of inoculation better so that the quick colonizers wouldn't sit around as long as the shiitake.

John led me to believe that I'd be purchasing the highest quality spawn available, and I'm pretty astounded that they would send out spawn literally covered in fruit.  For what I paid for this I could have bought two aa 1941's!

Would anyone use this product and risk huge bacterial outbreak in a commercial grow?
How would you handle this?

Pictures are needed.  With small amounts of fruits it will be ok; but IME spawn without the fruits will always be superior.

What he said. I have had contam problems with spawn that has a lot of primordia on it in the past.

well, first of all he is right.  it is (almost) impossible to make lm spawn and not have primordia form in it, even if you fridge it.  just the process of shipping and you will get fruit bodies in it.  we use it all the time primordia and all. no, it isnt a best case senario,  but it is really the nature of the species.  it wants to fruit. your best bet is to make your own so you can time things accordingly.  I have not noticed an increase in contam by using spawn with primordia in it, so long as it is clean to begin with.  like i said we do it constantly, as we are running this species all the time.  FYI... we slit the bags just 10 days  after inoculation;  thats about all it takes to fully colonize.  its myc is so wispy you might not even notice it.

Those little spikey pins are no problem. Even when the top of the far is plugged with pins I just rip it out and spawn away.

doesnt matter, only makes the primordia elongated and stringy.  its worse in a way;  harder to remove them.

Hey, I have a few jars fruiting, and have run out of substrate, was wondering if I left it to fruit would it work at all or is it a waste of time and I must make more substrate?
I am home growing and this is my first cycle

Seeing that a few in this thread might have passed of old age. What substrate are you using. What grain are you using? A sack of HWFP is $5. What's your setup?
