fermentation like smell then growth spurt
    #18982898 - 10/15/13 07:30 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys! a few weeks ago I inoculated 2 half gallon jars of wbs. In a few days they were both about 50% mycelium and I did a good shake but after a few days of waiting 1 of the jars was really not showing much growth at all and the other jar was going pretty slow. I tried to smell through the tape over the holes and I couldnt smell anything funky so I left them alone for about a week. when I checked back I found both jars in about the same condition  as the last time I had checked them. I decided to open them and give it a wiff and wheew it was smelling a little like a brewery. I did some reading and learned that my original problem may have been caused by lack of FEA. I wanted to see what would happen if I let some air in those puppies so I loosened the lids and put both jars on a shelf in my closet. That was 3 days ago, today I opened them up and smelled them again and one jar the smell was almost gone and mycelium was really taking off. in the other jar the smell was noticeably less and mycelium was growing as well.

Im wondering if anyone has ever experienced anything similar and if the mycelium in these jars might defeat whatever was making it smell funky?

well since it smelled then its bacterial contam. but i wouldnt introduce FAE(not fea) until fruiting because lack of co2 causes the myc to fruit. if your myc were truly fighting off the bacteria then you would see metabolites a yellow substance that leaks from myc when trying to fight off bacteria. i would need to see a pic and u need GE not FAE for fruiting its been proven time and time again and fae would only raise your risk of contams.
lets see some pics.

Bacteria will make it smell bad like that. I'm pretty sure those jars are bad if you smelt that AND opened the jars...

WBS colonizing isn't supposed to get FAE, only GE

FAE is fresh air exchange, GE is Gas exchange. FAE is when fruiting, GE is for colonizing/consolidating

Pics would help to see if that is even mushroom myc you're growing

it sounds like there was bacteria in your jars. probably happened when you inoculated them. When you shook the jars(which is ok) the bacteria
got a chance to get a foot hold while the mycelium was recovering.
When growing with WBS or rye berries you have to use filters like synthetic filter disks
on your jars or you will get lots of contams. Jars just need gas exchange
not FAE but taping over the holes is a bad idea that's why when you opened
they started growing better cause you let some air in but its prolly contamed now for sure.

FAE right not FEA anyhow i just loosened the lid I'm pretty sure that GE right? have to excuse me I left for school at 5:30am and just got home so im a bit tired. anyway, the myc is popping up all over the place in the one jar where the smell is almost all gone but its not really a solid mass of myc yet. If I can get a good shot I'll post a pic.

I can't start my own thread and am too stupid to know where to post this type of info.  It is too expensive... but for all the republican kids it might be worth daddy's money.
Should I get one rating even though I suck?

It is subjective maybe.  I've smelled fermentation type smells before and still had good fruiting from the jars.    I was thinking that the smell was because the substrate wasn't getting good fae... but once spawned/cased, they did well and the smell was more shroomy.

Use your best judgement -- but I would give them a chance.

i dont think you should use your best judgement... i think you should show a pic.. i mean what if its cobweb mold that fighting off bacteria then u spawn it then u have a huge amount of cobweb spreading spores all over your grow area.. you have alot of skilled growers here at your disposal why not utilize them. IMO.

I meant that as the jars continue to colonize: use "best judgement".

Certainly if the jars don't colonize quickly or have lots of green or cobweb stuff in them:  toss them out.  But stay the course... more info will present itself.

Avoid opening and sniffing -- the sniffer has bad stuff in it plus it vacuums in surrounding air.

Be prepared to punt on 3rd down if you have to...  there will be many other opportunities.  :0

Holy crap happy update on this thread!

OK so even though I never got around to posting pics on these this is what happened.
Like I said, I let some air in the jars and noticed some growth so I continued to do that for about a week and a half and the jars fully colonized. One was free of any ferment type smell and the other had a slight smell to it. I tossed the one that was smelly out and spawned the other one to horse poo. This was my first bulk experiment and I messed up and made it a little too wet. So it colonized about 90% and stalled out on me. The uncolonized sections were on the bottom of the sub. I refused to give up on it so I figured what the heck maybe I can get it to dry out a little bit.
I took it out of the trash bag and put it in my indoor greenhouse with the lid off of the container but I turned off the humidifier. After a few days I wasnt really seeing any change in growth so I turned the whole thing over and banged on the bottom of the container so that the sub would pop out and expose the uncolonized section to air. I cut off the section with the largest uncolonized area with a knife. 3 days later the whole thing was colonized and I noticed a bunch of white dots all over the place which I though was some kind of mold developing and I was ready to toss it in the trash. I just went up to look at it to make my decision and I noticed that the white dots were all over it, like 100 or more of them, too many to count! A few of them looked like they were getting taller! They are pins and they are everywhere! Its more pins than I ever thought possible. Needless to say I turned on the humidifier lol.

Hello,

I am new here and I will be growing from spores for the 2nd time in a few weeks.  I wanted to let people know that I have used a dough proofer as an incubator for grow bags.  I am brand spanking new to Shroomery so don't pounce on me too hard, just sharing what worked for me.:rasta:

:oldthread:

most dough proofers I have seen are very humid…u don't want that near ur filters.
