Same thing here? Off to check out californicus...

-------------------- "Shrub, 30-90 cm. Leaves 2.5-) 4-9 cm, sessile or amplexicaul, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, obtuse or rounded to subapiculate or subacute, when crushed not smelling of goats." "The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

Looks more like moelleri, possibly hondensis.

Looking again, the original post, stipe appears to be pinky, not so in mine...
Quote:
Agaricus californicus - like many other Agaricus species of the section Xanthodermati - displays a yellowing reaction where its flesh has been damaged. Unlike A. xanthodermus (another close cousin in the section Xanthodermati,) A. californicus's yellowing reaction is not always readily apparent. Even in specimens where the reaction is not immediately apparent the addition of a basic solution such as NaOH or even Lysol will cause the reaction to become quite noticeable, making this a convenient way to distinguish between A. californicus and similar mushrooms.
Manana on that...
Perhaps the op's are californicus, but mine seem more "sooty" on the pileus?
Quote:
Agaricus californicus can be separated from other Agaricus species that may have a brownish disc, e.g. A. bisporus by its annulus with a thickened "double-lipped" margin.
Anyone see that?
I'm leaning more toward moelleri for mine... hondensis doesn't seem to fit. I'll know more tomorrow when I check staining and smell, which I failed to do initially.
Didn't mean to hijack yer thread, op, it's difficult to get a positive fix on agaricus most of the time, hoped that if I chimed in with the same thing we'd figure it out.

They don't seem to be sexy enough for anyone to want to spend the time.
'Specially the ones that'll give you a bellyache.

I found some of these the other day! Although they are cool looking, I don't think they are the edible ones. Try cutting a chunk out of the base and crush it up in your hand and smell it. To me they smell like chemicals they use to clean public bathrooms.

Well, went back to the spot for a pinch and a twist on a fresh one... I tweaked it viciously at the base of the stipe, perhaps faint yellowing (or it's kinda old already, stipe looked a bit done) and no phenolic or porta chemical stank that I could discern. Ripped on the cap, really not much of any reaction or scent. Smelled pleasantly fungal.
I didn't wait around long, tho'. I had really expected a strong scent, disappointed.
Kinda back to square one.
