Melatonin tolerance

So, I started taking 3mg melatonin tablets to help me sleep - my sleep schedule was fucked (sleep @ 3am, wake @ noon) and I had to start waking up at 7am, and it worked! They made me perfectly drowsy and my quality of sleep may have even improved a little bit - I got my sleep schedule back on track too. However, the effects have been much weaker recently. I tend to take them for 3-4 days and then use the weekends as tolerance breaks, but I think I may still be building tolerance as 3mg/6mg used to get me drowsy before and last night 9mg didn't do anything.
Any advice?

I believe everyone typically gets 2 natural waves of melatonin waves at night. If you miss the second one, it is a lot harder to fall asleep. If you have a tolerance to melatonin because of the supplements, it will be ever harder to fall asleep. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you are supposed to be taking melatonin as a sleep aid every night.
Maybe just use it when you are adjusting to your new sleep schedules. Otherwise it is counterproductive in the long run.

Try meditating before falling asleep. or... Binaural (low frequency) beats? or... Calming NON-CAFFEINATED tea?

I've been taking it almost every day for at least the last year, likely longer. My dose hasn't gone up, stopped at ~1.5mg a night, which gets me nice and tired. More than that leaves me extra groggy in the morning, and less than ~1.5mg might even work.
I've noticed that if I'm not in bed ready to fall asleep during those first 30-45 minutes after taking it, I'll miss the effects and end up staying awake.
Even though I take melatonin almost every night, there are nights I don't take it and can fall asleep like normal.

Do you dissolve it under your tongue or just swallow it? I used to put it under my tongue because since the tablets are so soft it's supposed to hit your bloodstream faster, but I just down them now. True or no?

I think I've tried it that way once for shits and giggles. I may have noticed it hit harder and stronger, but I'm not sure.
The melatonin pressies I take are kind of hard so I'll grind them with my teeth a bit before washing it down with water.

You can get liquid melatonin too. I've been taking 3mg almost every night for a year or so now. My tolerance hasn't gone up at all, but I notice I don't get as tired as I would normally. That little bit of drowsiness the melatonin causes is all I need to enter my slumber.

...acquired tolerance is caused by downregulation of a certain enzyme in the liver, actually. I can try to copy the articles on my shitty cellphone internet

Oh and a brotip for you, I also quickly build one hell of a tolerance to melatonin. However there's there's something that puts me right to sleep that I don't build much tolerance to:
medical grade weed.

I have 3mg melatonin pills as well, and I remember reading somewhere that you don't actually need that much. 3mg keeps me wired and wide awake in some sort of dreamy state.
If I take 1/4 of the pill, I fall asleep within 20 mins. Just my experience, but I'm pretty sure 3mg-5mg is overkill

Well, I take 10mg melatonin pills from time-to-time. But anymore than three nights in a row and tolerance build-up makes it pointless.

There are a few studies that suggest melatonin dosage is counter intuitive and too much can produce a jittery awake feeling. 3mg may be too high, you might consider 1mg or 2mg. Those same studies found people hit a good zone around the 1mg range.

I would just sleep in complete darkness as light inhibits melatonin production, fluoride calcifies the pineal gland and that could lead to problems, taking hormones could make the gland lazy and you dependant on their dope
