lion's mane agar question

So I have this baby jar half-full of agar and half-full of lion's mane...what's the best way for me to start growing more lion's mane? I was thinking sticking a needle in and pulling out some of the mycellium to put on an agar plate, but the stuff is really spongy and I'm afraid that won't work...

You don't have a scalpel?
Anyway yeah you could just use a clean needle and scrap a bit of myceliyum then you transfer the tiny bit you have on a new plate.

I would figure you grow them just like any other myc. I have transferred myc. into another new agar jar and they still grow. They fully colonized the new jars in 2 weeks. But mine is the oyster type myc. though. I would guess the normal procedure is to put some in grains and put some in new agar jars. The spongy myc. will grow more when they start colonizing the new agar medium. Then you put some into storage inside the frig. for later use. The extra myc. you can do more experiments to see which way is the best to expand some more. I use a clean knife to cut off a small section of myc. and then put in new agar. You don't have to cut into the agar just take a small section at the top. That will do!

How did you get the agar to dry in the jar kinda sideways like that? I'd say you left it on it's side but it's only kind of slanted :O
Also, did you start from an LC? Just wondering if you opened the jar to transfer something or if you started with an LC syringe and shot it up?

Have you ever done any cloning?
If not you can find videos on how to do so.
That is what you will want to do.
Clean and sterile environment pull some mycelium out and place it onto agar.
Or another grain jar.
Avoid the uncolonized grain.
Also, why do you want to make a transfer before it is fully colonized?

Thanks all. Think I'll make an agar plate and then syringe it in.

Pressure cooked it and it fell over during. It was actually the only jar that worked, all the other agar baby food jars unscrewed and there was this horrible jello gunk coating all my rye quarts. Manned up and bought some actual plates after that.

Just injected this one with a spore syringe along w/ my rye jars. This was a jury-rigged master slant of sorts.

Nah I meant it. Grain to grain transfer is a great way to spread a culture.
Is that what you are talking about?
I have been missing things left and right on the shroomery for the last few days.
Grain to grain is one of my favorite ways to take a culture further.
I do it all the time actually.

I think the confusion is that my jar has no grain in it. It's as colonized as it's going to get.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh!
I see. I did not see that it was a rice flower or whatever it is.
Well then. What I said first. Cloning techniques will help.
Sterile enviro to- agar or grain.
Use whatever tool you have to just get some myc out and onto a plate then.
You could even use a knife if it is sterile.
You dont need a scalpel. Anything metal that you can sterilize.

Actually very simple process. In a sterile environment open this jar. Sterilize everything first before going in. Then cut some myc. from this jar into another jar either agar, grain, or anything else you want to grow more myc. In a week or 2 the new jar or dish will be fully colonized if there is no contam. I personally would cut as many little pieces of myc. as possible and put them inside a gallon size grain water bottle. In 2 weeks you will have a gallon grain to further expand your culture.
