Montana Alder Logs
    #18980724 - 10/15/13 10:18 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi
I was wondering if anyone can help me with some questions. I have been growing shiitake and lions mane indoor for a couple years now, but I just got a house with a yard and would like to try out some log cultivation. I have access to alder and cottonwood in my area. My questions are a followed: For Shiitake on alder.

* I would like to start now November. Is it to early to inoculate these logs?

* If not to early should I leave them outside, in the garage or try to talk my wife into leaving them in our spare bedroom?

* Do I need to water them during the winter months?

* Is it to early to cut the tree down?

* I've heard mixed suggestions of sunlight from 60% shade to 100% shade. What are your guys thoughts on that?

* Are there any other species I should concentrate on? Im thinking of starting out with shiitake and maybe lions mane, maybe oyster mushrooms.

100 percent shade helps control trichoderma on the logs.
wait till leaf drop.
you can knock up any time nov is fine but store in a protected place to let the spawn run for a couple of months. unheated basement, garage is excellent.  then put outside in the weather in full shade.
lions mane is unpredictable on logs oysters do fine but avoid super hard hard woods.  alder and cotton wood would be great for oyster.  shiitake is always the most reliable log producer.

oh, dont forget the reishi!!

Use a cold weather strain and that will be fine.  You can freeze shiitake solid and it has no negative effect.  We knock up all winter.

I would leave them in there ALL winter if you can.  the spawn will get a run as you have warm spells.  prolly doesnt happen too often in montana but if ur knocking up in nov. it is your best bet.  If you do a 24 hr soak after you knock them up, you prolly wont need to soak them again till spring assuming you are using very fresh logs...if then start to appear dry, soak them again.
