new guy here. what is this? N.C. Piedmont
    #18980657 - 10/15/13 10:01 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

First of all hello and thanks for having me.  just recently became interested in mushrooms and started looking around in the woods near my house.  found these growing on an old decaying hardwood. not sure what type of tree they are growing on or what the mushrooms are.  I picked them and they are under some glasses hopefully printing.  I have NOT ate them

Habitat: I found this growing on a hardwood tree in the Piedmont of north Carolina.

Gills: gills are white
Stem: white about 2.5 inches long

Cap: 1 to 1.5 centimeters color: white  conical on the top of the cap I see a brown area on all of them. only way to describe it is it looks like a nipple on a breast.

Spore print color:
Very important!  I just set up my spore print and I suppose I will let that sit for 24 hours.

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any. Not sure how to do this.

im back already and I think I may actually have something this time.  Key word THINK.

size estimate 1 cm
stem estimate 2 cm
gill color brown.  woods of NC growing close to a hardwood.  only saw two little ones by luck.  here are the pictures. also I have set up a spore stain.  from my reading (as humble as that may be) if I had to GUESS I would say psilocybe cubensis.  reason being: its on the list of whats in my area, fits the description, was near hard wood and their is a cow pasture near by less than 50 yards.  BUT IM VERY NEW AT THIS AND THATS WHY IM ASKING YOU GUYS. HOPE I DONT SOUND PRETENTIOUS

I'd go with Conocybe.  Cortinarius might also be a possibility.  You don't want to consider eating this mushroom.

Whats up, dude? Man, it hurts me to the bone to have to break this to you. Your enthusiasm is awesome. But I too hunt and reside in the NC Piedmont and I can tell you now, you are going to be very disappointed if all you seek are actives in this area. Amanita musc. and Panaeolus cinctulus around horse dung are going to be about all around here. And that is if you are EXTREMELY fortunate. I honestly hope you prove me wrong in all of this. After all, I am only one hunter and can only cover so much area. I wish you the BEST of luck with the cube hunting. I have always theorized that they could and should grow this far north but have yet to find any physical evidence to support said theory. I have long since abandoned "actives" as my primary target and replaced the objective as hunting for the perfect photo. Now if I happen to stumble across an active, it is just an added bonus to the days hunt. But so far, no luck. I have been faithfully hunting and studying mycology since May, visual free.

That was my first thought, but the stem does not look right for that.  I think it is closer to http://www.mushroomexpert.com/Mycena_galericulata.html

Stem texture does not look quite right for Conocybe, those usually have pruinose stems.  I was thinking Galerina however your guess of Cortinarius is probably more likely to be correct.  Since he said close to hardwood I am assuming it was growing from the ground, making Cortinarius pretty likely.
