I'm not wonderful at identifying A. muscaria because they either don't grow in my area or they just have very good cloaking devices, but here's a simple checklist that you can use to see if it's A. muscaria or not. It must have all of these things to be one. If one of these is missing, you don't have A. muscaria:
1) Warts on the cap 2) Skirt-like annulus 3) Bulb and shaggy concentric rings up the base of the stipe (no sack-like volva)
Read the Guide to Hunting Fly Agarics in North America. It gives good info on look-alikes.

All celebrity voices are impersonated. If you begin your ID request with, "I just ate a bunch of these mushrooms…should I not have done that?" I'm just gonna sit back and watch Darwin at work.

They have any number of distinct to relatively distinct complete to broken rings at the base. This is a feature common to infrequent in much of the section, including all members of the immediate muscaria group.
Mushrooms can't count.

No reason NOT to be!! I come in peace. Seriously, though. The method I posted earlier was taught to me by R.E. Tulloss himself. A. guessowii has the rings at its base to where A. persicina does not.

And that is wonderful, until you expect it to be written in stone.
The description for the species is a little less simple than that, and I'm dubious that Dr. Tulloss does not know this.

Well; in fairness I should say that it is in fact set in stone, but in the stone of the more exacting definition of the species as they are published.

Yes there are nomenclature changes being made as we speak. And yes there is a lot more to identifying than this method. But for quick field ID it has held true. For NOW, anyway.

I have read that. Is this based on this work or other?

A different project entirely. All new and improved DNA testing being used in this 2013 project headed by Dr. Tulloss. He is needing samples of Amanitas from different parts of the US. But the pre-shipping procedures are a bit tedious. My difficulties lie in the drying procedure. It has to be conducted just right so as to preserve the DNA. I do not possess the proper equipment so I, unfortunately, have not been able to contribute to the cause.
