How safe is Kazaa?
    #1897848 - 09/09/03 11:11 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

With the recent lawsuits (261 I believe) against people pirating copyrighted material, I was curious as to how safe downloading off of Kazaa is.

My local newspaper said a 71-year-old gentleman's grandchildren had downloaded a handful of mp3s at his house, to which he had no knowledge. He is being sued by the record industry.

If you clear out your shared folder, how safe is it to download mp3s? Movies? It is my understanding Kazaa does not keep a record of its downloads/uploads.

Should users of Kazaa start purging their mp3 libraries?

The RIAA is targeting people with high shares. If you clean out your download folder you should be fine. But who knows if they are keeping track of what, and what is to come. There are SO many kazaa users that I'd say your safe if you dont have GBs of shares. Use Kazaa light too (if your not already.) I couldn't see them cracking down on hundreds of thousands (millions?) of people.

Its pretty random that they choose the old guy. on the Political forum there is a discussion about this too and A 12 year old girl was another person named in the lawsuit.

I figure, they got such a small number of people in the suit compared to the mass on the service, that your odds of getting busted are slim.

I know not sharing anything will also lower your risks, but that'll just make you a leecher. I bet keeping your computer clean(from spyware and viruses) and firewalled, you should be pretty safe.

This isn't something you need to be paranoid about. Get Kazaa Lite and you're absolutely fine. Fuck the RIAA!

As for the news goes, half of this lawsuit bullshit is just propaganda. Remeber who owns CNN and Warner Music Group? Yeah, AOL TIME WARNER

Is RIAA targetting people outside the US?

Here's a link that lists the people they've targetted.

The RIAA knows that fear is the most effective method of getting users to stop file sharing, so they targeted:
A) College Students
B) A 12 Year Old Girl
C) A 70 Year Old Man

I dont think they're gonna take this losing-battle overseas until they get some ground in America. Which aint gonna happen.

Might be a long time before a European is on that list.

that sucks for me because ive downloaded a little over 20 GB's worth of stuff off of kazaa. of course only 3-4 GB of it was music, and the movies, well i went crazy deleting things that were somewhat not used often because my harddrive is outta room!! (40 GB harddrive, half taken by my precious music and music videos)

Maybe record sales would increase if the artists woud record a decent album. It used to be that an artist would release a single (45's) and sell it for a reasonable cost.
Now days most artist release a full album full of crap with only one or two songs being worthwhile of owning, therby maximazing the profit. Even some of the older bands that are known for having great albums have stuff on the market that is not worth purchasing. the first one that pops to mind is Supertramp that was released about 3 years ago.

I like diet-k cause it kills the spyware. You also
need a firewall because it stops the port scan
attacks.

Get DC++, the program has tons of files you won't find on kazaa, but it takes longer to download.

God could care less about who's vision of consumerism carries the law of the day. Remember Jesus in the money changers? Music is like air and we all have the right to breathe it. So artists may not make as much money and live as high on the hog in the future due to over previewed music. The big companies may break down. But fuck Clear Channel and all their robot DJs. Playing the same shit over and over and over and over and over and over (this gets boring).
