Looks like Psilocybe azurescens. What area of PNW, what habitat?

Washington state, Seattle area. Tallish grass covering wood chips with trees maybe planted a year or so ago so relatively freshly developed area.

Probably Psilocybe cyanescens then. Can you get close pictures?

Generally you want to wait until they have matured and dropped spores. You can tell they have dropped plenty of spores when the gills are purplish instead of tan. That being said, if the consensus is that more spores equals more mycelium, then one could also argue that you are prolonging the lifespan of the patch, should it not receive fresh substrate.

Sort of to say that picking them means they don't use up all the materials necessary for growth? Allowing more to grow? Or the opposite of that. Does maturity deal with potency as well? Are small ones still active?

Small ones are found to contain more per weight, but not significantly enought to say it's better to have younger ones. I prefer small mature specimens. They are generally cleaner with fewer bugs, they dry more quickly and and more potent per mass.

This is how big they could have gotten...
And if you bring a small pair of scissors or small knife you can avoid messing up any mycelium.

And you can accomplish the same thing by merely picking them more carefully.
FREEDOME: since you got so much substrate material up with your find, you could spawn it and the stipe buts to some other places for good measure.

Oh nice one man, normally I would have chose to sleep on them and wait for growth but the patch is widely known and frequently visited so I felt i needed to grab what I could, no intentional disrespect to the mushroom or environment but I will definitely go at it with scissors next time. Normally snip close to the ground or is there a preferable way to go about such.

you can take the larger pieces and the very butt-ends of the stems and merely bury them into wood-chips or layer of hardwood debris in parks and such as you walk around. Any place with suitable wood as long as it's moist.
you could also take it a step further and use them, or some of them, to inoculate your own supply of fresh chips.
Here's one approach: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7050955#7050955

I pick cyans with my fingernails, no need for scissors. Making sure I don't tear the roots up with them. Although my buddy dug up a bunch of pins with me, I came back the next week and there was around a thousand more growing, where at the time there was around 2-300

In the background I also see what look like they may be a large stand of Psathyrella, though of course I can't see them well.

I just have to speak my mind here. What you have in your hand needs at least 1-2 weeks more time to grow bigger and spread spores.
You are a baby raper and a patch killer. There are no "bigs" in your hand, just smalls.
Hang your head in shame
The fact is the longer you wait, the bigger they get, the more you can trip. Maybe you can understand that logic.
Problem is you're too worried about someone else getting those precious cyans that you just rip em all out on sight.
If you're going to be greedy at least use some fucking scissors
Oh yeah, nice haul dude...is that what you were lookin' for?

The "Bigs" he picked were growing in a grassy area, and in my experience with cyanescens growing in grassy areas is they grow very tall, and if it doesn't rain enough they start to rot quickly and insects start eating them. There will be no rain in Washington for at least the next week according to the weather forecast
We've all "Baby Raped" and didn't bring our scissors our first few times, but hes obviously here to learn and share what he has found- and hes already gotten his criticism, so no need to undermine his intelligence because he cant tell the difference between two species of mushrooms.

Lol your crazy bro! Sorry I hurt your feelings, it was far from intentional. I assumed the experiences with these were to open the mind to love, learn to manage the ego in order to be at peace and have a willingness to help others learn. I might not have experience with what I am looking for, yet, but I do have a respect for what the mushrooms were placed here to do for us and in the bigger picture I can only learn and increase my knowledge and how else do you plan for me to do that sir?

Ignore it. No great harm, and you know how to treat them from now on, and know now how to spread the mushroom also.

Now that is what you're looking for!!! Nice ones man. Just make sure you start a patch out somewhere very close to you with those stem butts. That way in the future you will have multiple patches and one you will be able to watch closely.
I recently took a few colonized chips from my backyard patch that I had started from stem butts a few years back when I made the same mistake. I stuck them in a bag of fresh woodchips to expand for next season. Best thing you can do.
