Microscopic critters.
    #18965949 - 10/11/13 09:27 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I took a clone of a wild mushroom. And the mycelium is beginning to grow so I decided to look at it under the microscope. I was exploring the web of mycelium when I noticed movement. There were these little amorphous blob things running (swimming) around. Basically does anyone know what these are? And do they pose any harm to my mycelium. Below is a gif of the "creatures".

That plate ended up being loaded with contaminations.  I've successfully transferred the mycelium to new plates and  none of the contams followed(yet).I've seen no more signs of the little creatures that I suspect were some sort of protozoan.

Yeah if you clone a wild mushroom you're going to have all sorts of contaminants show up. You have transfer some fresh mycelium from it to a new dish ASAP to get a clean culture, preferably before the contaminants have actually become visible.

Hell, even when cloning indoor mushrooms I do the same thing and make the assumption that the mushroom tissue I'm transferring is not sterile regardless of what part of the mushroom I got it from.

Yeah I've been transferring as soon as the mycelium has grown out onto the agar. Most of my previous clones have actually turned out rather clean. But I was also cloning from the most pristine specimens I could find. This time it was more this mushroom is quite interesting to me I have to work with what I've got.
