Music making programs?
    #18976360 - 10/14/13 12:18 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I sometimes have dreams at night where i hear music that's played from my soul. For a long time i have wanted to make some good songs personal expression bucket list type thing i have no illusions of being famous like that.

My buddy torrents and gets all kinds of free programs. What are some music making programs i could have him pirate for me that are user friendly, have a large range of effects and sound samples. I have no background in music except a few songs with fruityloops as a kid. That program always seamed kinda flat and felt limiting but that was years ago and maybe its changed.

(FOR PC)

Get Reaper. (A very reasonably priced Audio Recording Software that supports a ton of inputs, hardware and best of all, live virtual instruments!

Get a Midi Controller (A Keyboard - like an Axiom 49 for starts)

Get a USB Interface (like a M-Audio Fast Track) This allows you to plug in a guitar, and microphone, so you can do live instruments, and vocals for your tracks.

Get VSTi's and other virtual instruments. (Native Instruments makes tons!)  Absynth 5 for example,

VST's give you an unlimited combination of sounds, beats, pads, soundscapes, strings, vocals, classic synth to analog Moog shit.

It's pretty great, and very versatile once you get used to the interfaces!

----

Open Reaper - and you ensure it detects your midi controller!

Then you open a virtual instrument, and once that is complete, you have a keyboard, playing the loaded instrument in the program (Midi capability).

You can then just hit record, and it keeps track of all your hits, and blips, and then you can go back with a fine tooth comb, and ensure you've got what you want!

Now pick me up night and whirlwind and let me ride with you to peace of mind and nothing to rebel...

I use a combination of FL Studio for beats/effects which I can't make on real instruments, then Sony Acid to record, edit, mix, etc.

FL studio 11 is pretty simple but yet very professional

Native Instrument Massive for an all in 1 synthesizer also sylenth1

and do a search on a sample pack that suites your genre lots of good free ones on the web

download all of the above and prepare for and awesome music making experience

but before you get started you will need to watch alot of youtube vids to familiarize yourself with it... good luck making beats:grin:

if you are familiar with FL start there

alot of pros use FL

the theme for black ops 2 was produced on FL just to give an insight

Ableton requires a bit of patience and has a moderate learning curve but is a super powerful program and the sound quality that is second to none easily the best sounding digital audio workstation on the market

Good stuff in this post, except I'd recommend against the specific M-audio Fast Track... The drivers it uses that haven't been updated for 5 years are really quite horrendous... & it transfers data and power over the same usb cable - so it's very prone to introducing processor noise into your final output. Super cheap though! but 20-40$ will get you much more quality.

There are two industry standard DAWs, Logic and Pro Tools.

Logic only runs on a mac. It does all the same stuff as all the other DAWs posted and more without having to hassle with installing third party VSTs (though the option is still available.)

Pro Tools runs on PC or mac. It requires lots of third party software to become as useful as Logic, it's less user-friendly, but it allows for more customization. Plus there's way more third party software for PCs than there are for macs.
