nice! i thought when spawning BRF to coir one should do it right at 100% and not allow to consolidate though.

idk if thats smart.... coir doesnt germinate mold but mold can grow on it... if there are mold spores on my coir then the unconsolidated middle portion could get contaminated. idk why anyone would spawn unconsolidated.

ive read many times not to let cakes that you are spawning to bulk consolidate. i think it has to do with both, being easier to break up, and the mycelium being at a faster state of growth than if you let it consolidate. here is one such example of Notahacker420 suggesting to spawn at 100% and not let consolidate. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18180407#18180407

Does the same apply here?
Yes, no need to let cakes consolidate if spawning to bulk.
Spawn at 100% colonization.
Will you be pasteurizing your coir? either way, , your cakes should be fine and not a source of contamination on your coir. brush off the verm layer however. i gather you are followoing a tek on spawning BRF to bulk which i would assume mentions that. anyway, between the fact that they have been sterilized and you produced cakes 100% colonized with healthy mycelium, that means your cakes are for the most part contam resistant. chances are there is none if not much uncolonized area in the middle. even still, it would be sterile anyway.
someone correct me if im wrong.

some more examples. This thread here being the most recent, with input from some members on here that have been the most helpful to me and many. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18574098#18574098
i do suggest definitly pasteurizing though if you havent decided to already. it would be a shame for all of that work for nothing.

veda_sticks said: You only need to consolidsate before fruiting, not spawning. Consolidation allows myc to digest the food it colinises in prep for fruiting. If your spawning you want the mycelium to continue running.
When the outside of the cake is colinised, the inside is too, the inside too.
There's no need to wait after full colinisation when spawning. Give it a day if you must but not. Ful week.

RogerRabbit said:BRF jars can be used as spawn if they're fully colonized. You don't need to wait a week, as is recommended if you're fruiting it as a cake. Crumble your cake and mix it with twice as much pasteurized manure or coir. RR

Notahacker420 said: If spawning to bulk you never want your spawn to consolidate, you want to spawn right when it hits 100%, so it doesn't lose its vigor, and it will colonize the bulk substrate quicker.
Letting it consolidate will just slow down the colonization time when you spawn.
