Best Backpacking sites in the United States?
    #18974372 - 10/13/13 10:36 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So far I've done a week in the Smokey Mountains, and a week at Glacier National Part. I have to say I think Glacier will be hard to beat. What are some of your favorite spots you've backpacked in the US? I am starting to plan a trip with my friends this Summer and we are thinking of possibly Zion Rocks Utah. Any suggestions? An ass whooping is welcomes if the scenery is beautiful.

Thanks guys,
Drew

Yellowstone & the Grand Tetons.

Yeah Yellowstone catches a bad rap because it's so popular and there are a shit ton of tourists -- but something like 97% (that's an actual round about statistic, not an exaggeration) of the tourists never see anything beyond the roads that cut through the park.

And what you see from the roads from within the park isn't even a fraction of the park itself. I don't even think you see 5% of the park from the car. The rest of the epicness is in the back country. I mean you're talking about 3,500 square miles.

Just don't get eaten by grizzly bears or a pack of wolves

All the above and any place on the AT.  Also Medicine Bow National Forest was nice. So many places to go though really.

There's quite a few nice wilderness areas in far northern California, Marble mountains, Russian wilderness, Trinity alps, to name a few. All have extensive trail systems, plenty of backcounrty, best of all is there's no entry fees at all..

Don't pass up Northern New England, the Green Mtns of VT, The Whites in NH and the wilderness of ME. Pack your bug dope and prepare to have your ass kicked.

Yo man, if you manage to get to Zion I'd highly recommend the slot canyons/ bryce canyon and coyote butes which are all easy driving distance! If you are driving then I also recommend a campsite (forgotten the name but you'll see the signs) between Kanab and Page, really close to coyote butes, and absolutely empty when we were there! You have to drive about 6/7 miles off of route 89 which is already pretty much deserted and then end up in a beautiful rock formation, completely silent, beautiful stars!! I actually love that Utah/Arizona area! And its only an hour or two to the Grand Canyon..

But honestly, the slot canyons where the highlight of America for me (bar New Orleans), better than Zion IMO. It's just a surreal place to be, and the patterns in the rock are out of this world

Edit:

Just checked the campsite on google maps - its called white house campsite, check out the pics on google, its awesome there!
