hey guys, can i throw my spent mushroom substrate into a pot that i will be growing poppy seeds in? will they be mutually beneficial or will some of the bacteria infect the poppy seeds?

Grind that horse shit up, mix it with lemon juice and swallow it like a fuckin' man!

Ok back on topic: I don't think the bacteria is anything to worry about (unless it's badly contamed),but I also don't know what nutrients the mushrooms have used up which the poppies might have been able to utilize... seems to me the used sub might be nutrient-poor after the shrooms get done with it.. and if that is the case, you're better off just using some Miracle Gro.

As always, I could be wrong though. Maybe the shrooms actually enrich the substrate for plant growth.  They do put CO2 into the atmosphere after all, which plants need.  I don't know how they affect other things like nitrites, nitrates, trace minerals, etc... just something to consider.

Since things are slow tonight, I wanted to post this. As most of you know, contaminated or spent substrates make good plant food.
I'm posting this here, in Mushroom Cultivation, because the people here are the ones who will have spent substrates and such, and these people can have this new implication, for these things.

I grow hundreds of things, including fungi, so:
I've been doing some experimentation using actual P.Cubensis fruits, and spent substrate as plant/cacti/succulent fertilizer.
Some time soon I'll put it all together and write it up nicely. The results are quite obvious, it works well.

As a quick preview, when using 10 control plants, 10 plants with top quality miracle grow, and 10 plants with spent substrate mixed into the soil (about 30% mushrooms substrate, 70% soil) - The mushrooms substrate outperforms miracle grow and the control plants, very visibly clear results.
Nothing super dramatic, it's about a 20% increase over the miracle grows best average. But still, miracle grow is expensive, and repeated use can cause build up of detrimental salts in the soil, thus making your soil bad for your plants. Mushroom substrate on the other hand, not only nourishes the plants, but slowly eats even more organic matter in the soil, creating more, and more fertilizer. The mycelium unlocks valuable nutrients which the plants then use. The substrate slowly becomes soil as well.
It basically makes a super soil, if you're current with Paul Stamets researches and endeavors, you probably know what I mean more than I can explain.

Fruits will occasionally pop up to the surface when using substrate in your soil, I wouldn't harvest these. I just let them rot back into soil:

Sometimes if you have a bunch of later flush fruit(4th+), or just feel like being a boss, you can just toss some PE on your soil surface.
They will slowly rot, and become nourishment for the plants. I find that the plants really enjoy PE  Just kidding, I don't think they care.

In short, P.Cubensis, and any other species, fruits and substrate make excellent, effective, sustainable, organic and cheap fertilizer.

Have you ever checked out this post?
I dump my spent substrate in the yard
instead of in the trash pretty much every time I think.
and was rewarded in some cases, haha.

If you browse through RR's gallery you can see another pic from the same photo shoot with a strategically placed easter egg basket

But I'd be careful about posting those pics too often, he has previously threatened with the pre cropped version of the one above!
