Can you use normal pyrex plate as petri dish

I am trying to clone tissue with agar but i can't find petri dishes.
Can you use a pyrex dish and wrap it in saran wrap? Is it supposed to be airtight or allow a little airflow?

You can use some widemouth 1/2 pints. Yes, you want a little gas exchange. I just put an actual filter in the lid of the jar for GE.

What do you mean you can't find Petri dishes. Mycosupply (one of our sponsers) carries Petri dishes. Cynmar.com is another good source for Petri dishes.

Covering small jars or bowls (or also petri dishes without a top) with saran is a good thing for cultivating from spores. You sterilise them with saran on it, and when its cool you use a hot needle to burn a hole in the saran, through which you can slip your inoclating loop. even works well in open air sometimes. afterwards you cover it with something that allows air flow. The advantage of saran covers is the small opening and the reduced airflow. And its quick and uncomplicated for an noculation needle. But for cloning of bigger pieces of tissue, you´d have to cut/melt quite a big hole into the saran, and still may have problems to get your myc/tissue in there because it may stick to the saran or something. It still works, but it also sucks. You can´t really remove the saran completely for inocultaion, because you wouldn´t get it on there again without contamination risk.

I don't have time to order a petri dish. because the shrooms are ready and I do not know how to keep them fresh.
Also are you supposed to use tissue from the mushroom or are you suppose to use a piece of mycelium? because it looks like all the mycelium is dried up.
can someone tell me how to prepare it with a coffee filter? What do i mix the agar with? I got it in a little packet that looks like flakes

Not really.
Dry them, then rehydrate a piece of tissue when time come.
Buy petris by the 500 case for like $70 on ebay, amazon, our sponsors, etc.

While they are still wet?
They will grow mold.

A piece of tissue from the inside of the stem, usually from towards the bottom of the stem.

Prepare what?
Nobody uses coffee filters in mushroom cultivation.

It all depends....I have never heard of using honey.
You could use malt extract, potato flakes, yeast, etc.

ok how to you rehydrate? do you put it in a jar with a wet clothe? Can't i use a pyrex dish or half-pint? Some one said to cover the half pint with a coffee filter to allow gas exchange.
I just don't want to wait to get dishes on the internet.

Who ever told you to use coffee filters as filtering martial for agar mediums should be shot. Rather than spend the time and effort using techniques that don't work just to grow contaminations it would be better to wait the few days it takes for the dishes to be delivered to your door and do it right the first time. Don't forget the parafilm.

Coffee filters have no use in mycology, unless maybe you're straining out some tea.

Then you're gonna have to find a local source or deal with something that's not as good, such as pouring into 1/4 or 1/2 pint jars.

I use a coffee filter sometimes. I only use coffee filters to filter out the sediment when i make liquid cultures though. Which is about never these days, you CAN use coffee filters during the course of your projects.
Just not as a filter material on your jars or anything.

Go with the 1/2 pint jars unless you have very small (micro) hands or something. 1/4 pint jars are very difficult to cut sectors out of with persicion.

Not really. They're actually easier than 1/2 pints IME, because they're not as deep but have the same diameter.

The opening on 1/4 pint jars ARE NOT the same diameter as 1/2 pint jars.
I think you may be thinking of those flat 1/2 pint wide mouthed jars which are shorter than standard average sized 1/2 pint jars but have the same sized opening.

No, I was thinking regular mouth. You're right. But it's still completely usable, and is what I used for years before I decided to just get petris. They're actually slightly bigger than the 60mm plates I use.

Yes, but you can just use saran wrap.

These are what I use:

Advantages: Can pre-pour the agar (also known as no-pour) and then PC. No need to pour the agar after PCing (ideal if you don't have a flow hood IMO).
Disadvantages: Can not see through the lid so a sideways or bottom view is only possible.

I've never gotten a no-pour TEK to come out without shitloads of condensation. Even when I used jars for petris, I got to the point where I'd just pour them.
