Party drug Ketamine more dangerous than previously thought
    #18971568 - 10/13/13 09:53 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Ketamine is more dangerous than previously thought as users as young as 20 are being condemned to a "lifetime sentence" after having their bladders removed due to unknown side effects, the Government's chief drugs tsar has warned.

8:09PM BST 10 Oct 2013

Professor Les Iversen, chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), gave strong indications that he would recommend tougher controls, if not reclassification, of the class C drug when he reports to the Home Secretary.

"We're all aware that ketamine is a more harmful drug than we had thought a few years ago,” he said.

A new phenomenon of users taking "grand quantities" of the party drug every day has revealed a "completely unexpected harm" to bladders, he told an open meeting of the ACMD, the body which advises the government on the classification and control of drugs.

Originally designed as an anaesthetic and tranquilliser, often used on horses during veterinary surgery, ketamine was banned as a recreational drug in 2006. There are an estimated 30,000 to 50,000 users in England and Wales.

Theresa May commissioned the ACMD in March last year to refresh its advice on ketamine, which was last reviewed in 2004.

Mr Iversen said: "The example of bladder toxicity is a completely unexpected harm associated with a long term use of a drug which is normally used once or twice.

"For an anaesthetic, you don't take it every day, you take it once for your operation. For pain-relieving effects of ketamine are usually very short-term use.

"Now we see a completely new phenomenon when people take grand quantities of the drug every day, seven days a week."

Describing images of bladder surgery presented to the committee, he said: "This is a lifetime sentence for young users or any users. It's surely the basis of a strong harm-reduction message."

When asked if the drug will be reclassified, Mr Iversen replied: "We can't discuss that because we haven't decided yet. We haven't told the Home Secretary either yet.”

The ACMD is also asked to recommend how carefully pharmacies should control the drug.

Ketamine is currently listed as "schedule four" in pharmacies, which means there is little control, whereas veterinary practices already treat it as a higher category two drug.

Mr Iversen added: "We can use more stringent scheduling to reduce the danger of diversion from proper use to improper use."

ACMD member Dr Paul Dargan, consultant physician and clinical toxicologist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, is preparing a report for the Home Secretary to be released shortly.

The main area of new evidence is around bladder toxicity, he said, amongst dependant users taking a high dose.

They become trapped in a “vicious cycle” where they take the drug to treat the pain caused by their addiction, leading to more bladder damage, incontinence, and possibly surgery to remove the bladder, which is then replaced by a bag to pass urine through.

Dr Dargan said users across the age-spectrum are having bladders removed, including people in their "20s, 30s, 40s and 50s".

In 2004, the ACMD advised ketamine was harmful and posed risks for people with heart and circulation disorders and for schizophrenia sufferers.

It's called Moderation and humans need to learn to apply it to all aspects of life.
Anything done in excess will result in harm. This bladder issue is nothing new with Ketamine.

I used to use ketamine everyday for 6 months. Sometimes in absurd quantities. I walked away fine.

Makes me wonder what the general odds are for someone using as much as I did for damaging their bladders.

Are they saying they got sentenced to life in prison or that the gull bladder is a lifetime punishment for the ketamine use?

I was going to quote the same part.. most things taken in grand quantities every day are likely going to be harmful

When used sparingly, ketamine is a wonder drug IMO.

I think the urologist on drugs inc said that 1/4 of 1 gram a day users suffer from symptoms of ketamine bladder.

Mild depersonalization. It has its benefits and drawbacks.

I tend to be more cool-headed in stressful situations. I dissociate easily.

I have pretty much the same story, sometimes being cool headed is not a good thing though.
when it comes to close personal relationship issues not being bothered by the way other people act or feel can come across as uncaring and unsympathetic, and it has definitley ended at least one of my relationships and caused the downfall of another.

I think my ketamine use is not the sole cause of these qualities, i belive they are there anyway and perhaps that is one reason I have such an affinity to it.

(for reference I have had no health problems this year at all and I now take it 1-3 times a week, usually a gram in a sitting.

I only had bladder problems towards the end of last summer when I was taking up to 8 grams a week, concentrated over the weekend at music festivals as well as having multiple sexual partners. this resulted in particularly stubborn UTI's frequent urination and some blood in my urine.
I count myself lucky to have only experienced 'cramps' (I belive to be an inflammation of the bile duct) for a day a couple of years ago after being on 2-3g a day for 3 months)

I really never understood the attraction to Ketamine.

I've read of people having profound experiences with entering the K-hole but have never made it that far myself.

The thing that has really turned me off regarding "K" is the way people seem to fiend for it. I'm not a fan of substances that people chase around like a jonsers.

Never observed in humans or other primates (only in mice/rats), and not known to be caused by ketamine in any experiment I'm aware of.
