Advice on human ashes in cultivation

Last year I made friends with a kid that was quite awesome. He was full of life and loved talking about everything mushrooms, his knuckle tats spelled out mycelium. I agreed to take him out hunting edibles and actives this fall, but he died in an accident this spring and I never got the chance. I've been real tore up about it since and haven't been able to let go. I was at a metal show a week ago when I ran into his dad and we started talking about the kid, and how hilariously outlandish he was.
Anyway, let's get to the point. When his dad found out I've grown cubes he asked me to do a batch with the kid's ashes in them so we could all trip with him one last time. All I've done is PFtek and I wanted to know if I could do brown rice verm cakes with a little of the ashes in them, and if so how much could I put in before it had an adverse effect?
Thank you in advance for any advice, I really don't want to bone this one up.

I doubt the ashes would have much of an adverse effect on them. Just add a few table spoon fulls to the mix and carry on as normal. Good luck man

Btw sounds like a pretty cool thing to do. It reminds me of that movie how high. Is his dad going to trip with you?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Yeah, his dad is going to trip with us. It was his idea after all, says his son came to him and asked for it after he died.
I just really miss my friend.

The only reason I ask on quantity is I know ashes raise PH and I didn't want to create an inhospitable environment or weaken the mycelium enough to allow a contaminate in.

It sure is. We weren't even friends that long, He was just one of those young kids that gives you hope for the future.

You could add a little gypsum to help buffer the pH a little. As long as you don't go crazy using a bunch of ashes you should be good.
Btw I don't think ashes are acidic but I could be wrong.

They're not acidic, they're alkaline. I've used them to raise soil ph in soil mixes for...er..gardening
Good idea on the gypsum though, a lil buffer never hurts.

Is gypsum a buffer as in an actual ph-buffer? Those buffers work by adjusting the ph both up and down as needed. I thought gypsum was more like a slowly working ph increaser, as the metabolism creates an acidic environment over time.

My understanding of gypsum is that it's a stabilizer in soil, holding PH at a steady level rather than adjusting.
Could be and have been wrong before. I'm used to mixing organic soil, so deviating from standard mushroom TEK is new territory for me.
sheesh, now I've got gypsum, oster shells and dolomite dancing through my head...oh my.

This is going to be the problem. I'd suggest making the brf just a bit on the wet side so you can squeeze out enough for a pH test. Adjust as necessary to around pH 5 to pH 6. Citric acid or just squeezing a lemon into the mix will bring the pH back down.
Be sure to get the correct moisture content before sterilizing. RR

Yes gypsum is a pH buffer. It is very interesting thing that I don't fully understand so I won't pretend to but it can both raise and lower pH. It also helps by adding some beneficial minerals such as calcium.

As always RR swoops in with the solution. I would follow this advice because like you said you really don't wanna bone this one up

Thanks RR!
Any advice on the amount of ashes for say 12 half pint jars?
Edit: Now I'm going to have to dust off the old PH meter. Ever since I started TLO soil mixing that thing got shoved to the back of the closet
