Yeah being opaque it is hard to see I guess Saran Wrap would work but I would probably want to use some thin plexiglass, more for looks than anything good idea thought. I bought some wet wipes says kills 99.9% germs I wonder if that would be good shit for cleaning inside of box and your equipment? I'm getting ready to load in some jars and I think I will use that to wipe them down. Oh by the way I revived your thread on cont. because those pics were way cool but I wanted to add I wish I would have taken pics of some of the shit I had in Petris for months, I didn't realize how dangerous some of this shit was didn't know if you saw that or not?

Alcohol's not a very good disinfect. The "kills 99.9% of germs" claims on certain products are misleading. Usually they're only referring to certain bacteria and viruses.
Fortunately it's not even necessary to kill the contaminants. On a material like plastic the vast majority are removed just by normal cleaning methods.

That is exactly why I use it, I have had more contams from bacteria than from mold and using alcohol seems to help, or at least in my own head it does . . .

I just figured those wet wipes would be nice and easy but I guess no easier than using a soapy rag because I came to find it kind of leaves a sudsy residue on your equipment. I think now I am going overboard trying to keep cont. out, but I did my third agar pour w/ soufflé cups(the reason behind the soufflé cups is in another post but first two agar pours I got a lot of mold the third one 0% cont. rate! I'm making progress I was starting to think this was above my capabilities but 50 cups 0 cont. I am pretty proud!

How many times do u usually transfer a wild mushrooms running mycelium? Just until you see no cont. are is there a minimum you always do, before transferring to grains? Also do you always transfer before it hits the sidewalls of plates as in my experience they almost always cont. when it hits, I know what Paul Stamets says but would like your opinion!

IF it stops sectoring you have an isolate, like if it grows in a perfice circle, but if the ciclre isnt round and grows toward the edge faster in some spots you can keep transferring

Cool thanks man! I transferred to grains on 2nd transfer of turkey tail and on 2nd day got a green cont., I was wondering, should I pitch the grains now so I can save jar, are can I wait and see what the t.t. mycelium does to it. I know that's probably a stupid question, just figured I would ask, it's not like t.t. Are hard to come by here. I also had made another transfer to agar that took off like a mofo, so I do have a backup.

You want to do one transfer as soon as the first mycelium starts spreading outward just to isolate it from contaminants which show up shortly after the mushroom mycelium. I wouldn't even wait to see if any contaminants start growing or it's just that much harder to isolate from them.

Thanks Kizzle, but about the grains that I transferred to that have a green cont. started in them, go ahead and pitch correct? I want to save the jars but kind of wanted to see what the turkey tail mycelium would do to it, as I have only 10 jars go ahead and pitch, and jars can be saved right? Ps I am going to have some pics on cont. in Petris soon (And soufflé cups) but nothing compared to yours I double zip locked bagged them so everything should be ok?

You can reuse jars. Just don't open mold contaminated jars indoors unless you sterilize them first.

Meaning dump the grains in a ziplock Baggie seal throw in trash, then wipe out with alcohol, would that be good? Then once inside, put in PC for a while then pull them out and clean w:/ soapy water, then rinse out soap? I'm kind of confused? I know I can look up old threads but you seem to know wtf your doing for sure! I have read and read, but speaking with someone who has def. ran across a multitude of cont. makes me feel 100% better, hell I just read a thread talking about a pink cont. that gives you spinal meningitis, fuck me! It almost scares me enough to quit and I am loving this hobby! Again thanks Kizzle

Gotcha I am gonna figure this out eventually, I do believe moving onto diff. Species are going to be a lot easier after all these cont, and wonderful people such as yourself giving me a big hand. I have always pretty much been interested in growing my own mushrooms since about the age of 15 ( but back then only concerned of one kind LOL) as I read high times a lot And would see the grow kits in there and read up on it a little back then and seen you pretty much had to have a PC, it was game over, and my parents would not have approved, and PCs were out of my price range back then. That was app. The year 1992. A LOT has changed since then and finding Paul stamets book GG&MM made me think I can do this, so I have most all materials, books, and equipment for doing this now! It has been a lot of trial and error but I am getting closer everyday, I have done one grow of pearl oysters from a kit, if you have any interest as to what I did with the mushrooms besides eat them there is a post in gourmet and medicinal mushrooms. It is labeled prickly pear used in substrate, I think you might enjoy it. Anyway I'm working on reishi, enoki, and turkey tail ATM and if I can get these wild ones figured out, I,m pretty sure if someone would make a trade with me for some cubes or something of that nature I' m pretty sure I could pull it off no prob. I could always buy a syringe ore filled with spores, but I want to get fully in on this site and start some trading I can't wait! Ps sorry for always the long and not very well written posts but I have a hard time getting my point across in few words thanks so much for all the help I' sure I' m not done asking yet but don't feel as if you have to reply, but i would def. be bummed to quit hearing from you if any of my labors come to fruit or you want any wild gourmet prints or Petris grown out w/ mycelium don't hesitate to ask I will do what I can to come up with what you would like u deserve it no doubt peace
