ID help
    #18970095 - 10/12/13 09:44 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I came across this mean looking guy in the western mountains of PA. I was not able to take a print, does anyone know what he is?

I nominate Inocybe hystrix.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I don't think Flammulaster. I don't think Inocybe. I could be wrong. Maybe Cyptotrama asprata.

Is the cap 1/4" in diameter?

I know we're talking about multiple small mushroom species, but those things are tiny.

Nor I. I'm guessing on all fronts in this instance.

Couldn't rule out a young Pholiota cf. flammans either. Since we only have a shot of that pin from the side I reckon we've given the OP good pointers if he wants to go back or check his other shots.

Could also be Strobilomyces sp. if it has pores.

Although I called it a pin it is quite well formed in proportions that rule out a young bolete, and the colours and habitat are very different. (But please don't be discouraged! Mistakes educate innit.)
