Question for the Brits

So I've been reading about your government structure. I understand the House of Commons cause it's pretty basic and similar to what we inherited from you guys.
But the House of Lords, your "senate" so to speak. I don't get it. You have like 750 senators or Lords and the house of commons has 500 members, some of the lords have hereditary seats, the church has like 25 seat they can't lose the "Lords Spiritual". WTF is this shit???
Do you guys elect all of these people? Have they done some newsworthy controversial things or has it become useless like the Canadian Senate?

Most of the land they colonized became great countries. Including the US. They must be doing something good.

The only (former) member of the house of Lords I've heard anything about was Conrad Black, ran a bunch of newspapers in Canada and then renounced his Canadian citizenship in order to become a lord in Britain. Later he went to jail in the US and now Canada won't let him back in because of his criminal record I believe. Must be kind of shitty for the country you were born in to turn you away like that, but he brought it on himself. He could have become a lord without renouncing his citizenship if he had the Canadian PM's permission, but Chretien thought he was a dick I guess.

Impeccable logic. Therefore, yes.

They are not elected and are mostly people who have been nominated by the PM and made peers (like duke, earl, baron) by the queen, these are usually given to party donors.
I don't think they can actually stop a bill becoming law, so they don't have much power.
Have a read of this for controversy.
