Chlorophyllum ID
    #18969243 - 10/12/13 05:46 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Wanted to confirm these were chlorophyllum rhacodes, I'll take a print when they mature if necessary but I've found c. molydites many times and these are smaller, shaggier and it's in the 40-55 degree temperature range in portland.  These things just popped up in a weird corner of the backyard where a stone wall has fallen apart, you can see they're growing from between the fallen cinderblocks and beside the brick walkway.   What's the best time to harvest these?

Nowish. Or when they are open a bit more but not fully open. If you get them in their drumstick form and leave them a while they will open out by themselves anyway. A spore print will confirm that they are not C. molybdites.

Yeah, if there is a dryer vent nearby it could be C. molybdites.

Totally not joking. Alan mentioned something about them growing on Berkley campus under some warm air vent in the winter.

You can't walk ten feet without tripping over these C. rhacodes in BC right now!  I'm gonna harvest some soon.

Right on. I harvested a bunch last season. I heard that the flavor profile changes over a year or two for the better. I dried and jarred mine
and still have not used them for anything. I wonder how they taste?

i haven't tried them dried ever, but fresh they're very meaty, even for a mushroom.
i make a pseudo philly cheesesteak with them

Nice guys, one is farther ahead than the others, it's in my yard so even if this year I let them go too far for prime eating next time they fruit I can harvest earlier.  I doubt they're green-spores, I used to find those bastards in Philly all the time and they were much more robust and lighter colored.  Stay tuned for the print...

I am 99.9999999% certain those are C. oliverii.

Never had that specific species. I got the C. rachodes.
