Psilocybe azurescens outdoor bed - Fall 2013, 2014 - Hardniess Zone 5a 3

I started this year's bed from a master culture I Isolated from some gill fragments a friend sent me last year.
The culture was started last November and went into rye a couple days after christmas 2012. I knocked up some wooden dowel plugs with the rye masters in February 2013 and set them in a cold spot in my house. They love the cold and tore the dowels apart in time to be tossed into some wood chips in the beginning of march.
In the beginning of march I soaked some oak chips in cold water with dish soap for 4 days and after draining them I mixed them with some forest floor compost after in a large black tote with holes drilled in it like a shotgun chamber. The substrate was not pasteurized. It was only soaked and drained and left to the elements outside for the spring.
In the beginning of June I dug a hole about 4 inches deeper than the chips and compost would reach and dumped them in.
I made a thin top layer about 2 inches of broken twigs and leaves and various forest debris.
I left the bed out there all summer to tend to itself until a few weeks ago. At that point I went up and spread a bag of organic potting soil over the area and covered it with more leaves and twigs leaving a 1 inch lip around the area between the chips and surface of the ground.
Since then I've been going out with a heavy spray bottle and soaking it down once a day with a quart of water.
Then last week it rained for 6 days and when it stopped I went out to check on the bed and mist it and it had moved into fruiting mode so I capped the bed with clear plastic bins that are about 8m inches high. This is the reason for the lip around the bed. To help keep the humidity up after misting everydayand still give the fruits room to grow.
These guys love cold and water! lol...
Here are the photos I have so far of the best cluster out there. There are a number of clusters,.... new pins everyday but this is the nicest ones and the farthest ahead.
The tub set up [The weights are to keep them from blowing over in the wind]

Sweet! I'm in zone 2-3 and it took 4 years for one of my beds to fruit the very first time. Another took 2 years for the first fruits.
Once they get started though, they'll really take off. Make sure they have a lot of room to spread out.
I should go take a pic of some of mine. It's 18F here this morning and they're all frozen solid. Most have already frozen and thawed so many times they're black.
Next year I have to remember to pick the bastards on time. RR

Hey RR,
I will definitely be doing this. Shouldn't be a problem considering how aggressive this bed is. Little by little I will expand it out every year...

Wow, that's cool. Good job.
I am in 5a too. It would be cool to have an outdoor bed that didn't die evey year.
Do you expect it to survive the winter?

I don't see why it won't survive the winter. I'll fill the bed in with fresh chips and cover it with potting soil when it gets really cold to keep the snow off the myc.
I have another bed that survived the last two winters but is not in a very ideal place to fruit and all I have ever gotten out of it is aborted pins.
I hope to see this one survive many winters.
The fruits are so cool looking in person. They look like little orange dum dum pops.
Something gives me the feeling eating a whole one wouldn't be a very good idea though .

totally in that hardiness zone. Totally taking notes on this method!!!!
was wondering the time schedules and the ratio of success beds to failed beds. One bed taking a year or more to fruit sounds crazy, but not unheard of i guess. Only with time do you earn good things. what do you think your fail to success ratio was?

- How much woodchips did you spawn to? How deep and wide is the bed?
- How much spawn used? Was the spawn from colonized chips from other beds or fully colonized cultures from indoors?
I am going to spawn some woodlover beds this coming Spring and im curious.

I live in hardiness 9a so im guessing they would colonize a bit quicker where im at. My hardiness zone is damn near the same as Astoria just a little colder by like 5-10 degrees in the winter and drier/warmer in the summer.

Yea they definitely would be a hell of a lot easier to grow there. It took me a few years to get it here.
The conditions get a bit more frigid a bit more rapidly in my neck of the woods.
Now that I know how to care for them here I will likely keep beds going for years to come.

Strange how the morphology can change when you take them away from their home. These guys are pretty far from where they came from would be the reason I would imagine. And for many years too. The genetics came from a hammond strain syringe from workman back in 2006,.
I thought they looked pretty close but thats just me,

When do you usually see the first frost and first snow?
We had a frost last night but the way I have it set up keeps them from getting burned by it. They got a little nip one night which you can see in the blue bruising on the nipple tips of the older ones in the middle of the cluster but that isn't a big deal really.
In my area I will probably see these things fruit well into December. It starts snowing in late November here but the tote tubs will keep it off the bed and until the ground actually freezes which comes a little later they will be fine.
This morning it was 28 degrees out but only for a few hours so they didn't come anywhere near freezing.
The water on the leaves all around them didn't even crystallize the slightest bit.
In order for them to freeze the ground around them has to freeze and that shouldn't be happening for more than a few weeks if I am lucky.
The next week will be the same everyday, around 30 degrees at peak low overnight, but only for a few hours so they should be fine to keep on plugging along.....
These things are super hardy though and will freeze solid and thaw back out and keep growing even if it were to get a little more on the cold side than they'd like out there.

Hey prof, 1. Great work! 2. Will the azures actually fruit most of the year in your hardiness zone?
I'm in the same zone and was wondering. Am going to start an azure culture this winter for next spring.
3. When is the correct time to spawn outside where the azure bed will gain a foothold for more than a year?

I'm locatedin New England. I don't believe anyone else has documented a fruiting in the state I' live in...
They don't fruit most of the year here. Just September through late December - early January if they are cared for properly.
I spawned these to chips in the beginning of march and placed the chips in the bed in the begining of June.....

The Azzy bed started fruiting again.
I moved this past summer and dug up the bed and threw it in a big black tote with some fresh chips. I kept it by my back stairs all summer and made sure it stayed hydrated for the season. I covered it with a few gallons of roots organic potting soil in the last week of august and they started pinning a couple days ago.
Here is a crappy a cell phone shot of the biggest ones. I'll try and grab a charger so I can charge the battery for my real camera. It got misplaced in the move so I'll have to replace it if I can't find it. The weather has been weird. Hopefully I get enough of a window before it starts freezing for the few clusters that are going to fully mature.

I believe we are in the same hardiness zone and I too also have azures popping up.
they seem similar, but I want to see what they look like mature. have you gotten spores before?
I'll upload my pics tomorrow, harvested a few today

Hey MH420...
If you look back at the beginning of this thread I have a whole bunch of fruits from pin to farvest from last year.
I did take prints last year and plan on it again this year if these guys survive long enough to drop spores. I like to keep a fresh print on hand just in case I end up needing it. It looks like the weather will permit it for the next week or so at least so all I can do is cross my fingers..
I did go out and grab a new charger so I took a couple pin shots today that were a lot nicer.
Here they are ....

Thats after i raped it last friday.
Characteristics seems to be very similar.
What did you use for your top layer? I think the dirt i used was too heavy with clay for a real good flush...
No spores though.... Ever get any out here?

Yea, those look to be Azzies too They could be allenii or something though. I'm not really an ID guy but there is no way of knowing from the pix unless you know what and where the spores came from.....
I used roots organic potting soil this year to cover the chips but last year I just used soil from the area when I made the bed.
They should drop prints if you leave them alone for a while and let them mature more. These guys tend to fruit very slowly.
These fruits dropped very dark prints but took about 2 weeks to do so.

I took about 20 prints of so last season.
I use a tote with holes drilled to lay over the patch to protect it as it fruits to get them along long enough to print.
I mist it once in the morning everyday but not too heavily and I use a fine mist when doing it.
Here is an update on the ones that are going now..

Hey Ham,...
How have you been?
I will can hook you up with one if I can manage to get them there this year but won't have a give-a-way or anything like that. Shoot me a PM and I'll see about getting one out to you if it happens.. The forecast should give me another week or two until the temperature gets too low to cover the tote with a tarp to ward off the cold over night. They can handle a few freezing nights with a tarp so long as the day temp rises up enough but if it stays below freezing for more than 24 hours straight it is pretty abusive to the little guys..

They seem to be only throwing side pins this year. I am assuming this is due to the present situation with them being stuck in a tote and all. Next year I will lay them back down into a bed if I get a chance.
Not much has changed but here is an update.

Maybe the center is too wet? Maybe if you score the center, dry it out, and throw some casing on mushrooms will pin in the grooves?
At any rate I think they would benefit from drying out a little. The ones that have already grew are getting big quickly with more than adequate moisture at least though.

im going with overly wet... How big have you gotten these bad boys?? Mine only get 2-3" and stop...
Have you had an issue with cracking caps because of the rate of growth?

Yea, this is definitely the problem but I'm not too worried about it.
The weather around here hasn't really been giving me the opportunity to let it dry out.
It has been raining just about every other day so even with the top on the tote I am pretty screwed in that department because of the FAE holes that are drilled everywhere.
In any case I am just happy to be getting the fruits I have for now. Next year I'll try and find the time to lay the tub back into a bed.. If not they will just get rotated into another tub with more chips until I can get a chance at some point.

I have gotten absolute enormous Azzy fruits in this bed.
This should put it into perspective

That isn't the biggest either, this one was the size of a small dinner plate in diameter

I've never had an azzy crack on me but that is because I keep the humidity where it should be. Mushrooms usually crack from low humidity rather than growth rate..
Here is an update on the fruits going now, It was mega cold last night and they loved it, lol

I wouldn't take more than a gram of these guys, thats for sure, lol. I don't really think I'll be giving prints out this year. I am pretty busy at the moment and will likely only take 1 if I can even get them there to replace my old back up print..
Like I said up thread it has been getting cold here so I don't even know if I will make it to the point where they drop spores before a total freeze. It hit 28 last night for quite a few hours. I had to cover the tote with a carpet and some 4mil black plastic to keep the cold out.
Here is another update.. They are starting to look nice now,

I appreciate the myco porn! Make sure to update us on what you decide to do with it after this year. If I were you I would put this one in the ground after it is done fruiting and next year start another one next to it.
Maybe you could have the spawn ready in the spring. Would it be possible to make a clone of one of these fruits in a liquid culture? If so that sounds like an idea!
Keep up the work, lookin good!

It would be possible but pretty hard and it would take a lot of work. You'd have to take a tissue culture and clean it up and then make the LC from there. There really isn't much of a point to do that with this species though. All you need to do is use stem butts and cardboard. Once you colonize the cardboard which doesn't even require sterilizing you can then inoculate wooden dowel plugs and expand to chips from there.
Since the bed is fruiting I can just keep expanding off of it and don't really need to make any more jars or anything like that. If hypothetically I were going to make up jars it would have to be right now if I planned on any possibility of a bed with new genetics fruiting next fall...
ON to the update.... These guys are still coming along,
I probably will let that first smaller cluster on the side side fully open so I can get a replacement for my back up print.
The other ones I will probably take down earlier to preserve potency and quality.

Congrats on the middle pins, looks like they were just waiting for it to dry out a bit.
I understand what you are saying about just expanding the patch with existing mycelium. That sounds like the best plan, sorry for my noob advise! lol
I hope the weather holds out for ya!

Thanks guys,
I actually took another video today that is even better. I did it after dark with the flash on so it came out 1000x better.
I harvested them all with the exception of the new pins that have been forming. I took some harvest photos and will go through them tomorrow and post the final pix up.
Here is the new youtube video. They are quite ripe!

Was that video handheld? It looks very strange, like the camera is floating or something. Really cool. Also, what song is that?

The video was taken with a iPhone 5s. I just have practice so I know how to hold it and move it so it looks decent. The Song is by Omission and is called Huma-Huma https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Huma-Huma+de+Omission
OK on to the update, I took down all the mature ones last night and it is supposed to be very very chilly here for the next week straight so no telling what will become of the pins in the center but they are looking very healthy. If they do end up surviving they will probably be nice too.
Here is a final round of pix from just before I harvested the two main clusters last night.

And here are a couple shots of some fruits after harvest and left overnight to bruise up. This should give you guys an idea of how potent these things are.

I'll update the thread again with the pins if they aren't black within the next couple days from freezing....

This is the info he gave me so I assume they are hammond strain,

Check out the site where I harvested the first cluster! I took the pic a few minuted ago so it is about 40 hours or so since harvest.. I'd say the bruising has definitely set in, lol..

Yea, me too. I got that guy off before he did any damage though. I use kelp meal and it keeps them at bay but it has rained a bit since I applied it so the sea salt probably was mostly washed off of the surface layer by the time I took that pic... If I didn't use the kelp meal they would have been devoured a week ago for sure.
Here are a couple shots of the new clusters after the temps hit 25f last night and it snowed. The tub stays covered so the snow didn't penetrate their environment..

Stay tuned

I haven't gone through the pix yet from this fall but they are on my computer.
I posted a video on youtube that I shot for now before harvesting them.. I will pop back in and post the pictures eventually..
This years fruits were on the small side. I hadn't added any chips to the bed. This up coming spring I will expand it for sure...

Hey man, I saw your videos on YouTube and after 9 years, found this thread of yours. I love what you've done with the Azure patch, but I saw you haven't posted on YouTube in years, and was not seen on Shroomery for years, neither..
I hope you are doing well man, wherever you are.. And if you can give us a sign of life, 7 years in the future, an azure patch pic would suffice.
