The smell of shrimp.

I went for a little hike today hoping to stumble across some fall boletes. Alas, I did not. However, I did find a boondoggle of what I take to be shrimp russula.
They were growing in a group pushing up pine needles under fir and ponderosa pine at around 5000 feet elevation in a kind of open area between large trees.
Judging from the smell on my hands that is a good ID. However, as always, since I don't commonly pick these, I would like to hear from the experts. Many thanks!!

It sounds like they are certainly a shrimp russula, but that doesn't nessesarily nail them down as the shrimp russula.
I'd love to tell you it doesn't matter, but I have insufficient experience and knowledge myself.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Sure looks like them. I don't know what else they could be. A book I have here says they should bruise yellow and finally brown.
There are microscopic suggestions as well. I can tell you if you like.

Those ones have always confused me.... russulas in general frustrate me.
I have yet to harvest any as I am always unsure if they are actually the shrimps or if they might be one of the many others that look like them...

I just tasted the caps and they taste outstanding and mild. There is no bruising evident; perhaps a tiny bit of browning where I cut them at the bottom. These are some handsome mushrooms, almost like boletes in appearance. Nary an insect anywhere; they hadn't yet pushed completely out of the duff.
I think I am going to try a small portion and see how it goes.

Sounds like a plan. Exactly what I would do.

I would eat these... in small portions at first.
They look excellent.

Oh. My. Goodness.
Those are SO delicious. Very firm. Mild nutty flavor.
It is tough to only have a little. But I did it.
Putting the rest aside till tomorrow, when I'll know it's good to go.

They do taste like nuts don't they! They are in the top 5 for me when it comes to edibles.

I think Russula's have a good texture. They don't reduce in size either which is good. They are also easy to clean since they don't soak up water. I've never tasted any choice Russula's though.

I can't believe I haven't had this mushroom before.
I believe that is only because any time I've found them in the past, it's just one or two - not worth disturbing.
But this was a super big "family" of them, all within a 20 foot radius. The lumps in the duff reminded you of bolete hunting. Untitled, you're right - they don't shrink much while cooking and are very firm.
I am definitely adding this to my list of things to hunt in fall!
I DO promise to revisit this thread should I feel unwell later.
