Are these ready for birthing? Also dunk and roll questions...

Hi all,
This is my first grow (PF TEK). The community here has been great in helping me out so far... I have just a few more questions:
1. Is it okay to put water in my BRF cake jars for the dunk procedure, instead of putting the cakes into a plastic baggy with water? Any reason not to do this?
2. Is filtered water from my fridge okay?
3. How important is the cold shock? It isn't exactly easy for me to put the cakes in my fridge... any alternatives?
4. Vermiculite is safe without sterilization, right? Should be okay to roll in verm right out of the bag?
5. Do these look ready for birthing (see pics - sorry for blur)? Should I wait until I see first signs of pinning? Colonization all around sides and bottom.
Thank you so much in advance!

1. I would dunk them all in a large pot or bucket for 24hrs....but that's just me.
2. Yes. Tap water, rain water, pond water, toilet water....just not distilled.(ok maybe not toilet water)
3. Cold shocking is not good for tropical species, and cubes are tropical. Are you growing cubes?
4. Yes, there is no real need to sterilize the verm you are putting on fully colonized(contam restant) cakes.
5. Wait one week after full colonization before birthing. This is so the mycellium can digest some of the nutritious substrate it has colonized.

Thank you so much!
I will try to fully submerge them in a bucket with tap/fridge water.
Good to know about the cold shocking - yes I am growing Amazon strain cubes.
Thanks for the verm confirmation.
Will wait a few days more then!

Don't get impatient and birth them early. I know it is hard on your first grow but trust us. We are professionals! You want to give them a full week consolidation period. If you don't you won't be gaining anything. As a matter of fact you'll be losing something. If you birth them early they will just sit in the fc for a week and consolidate anyway and by the time they fruit your cakes will be a little dried out and they won't perform as well. If you let them consolidate in the jar they will be ready to fruit as soon as you birth them and they will be freshly dunked and fully hydrated while pinning giving you better yield

Why can't you use distilled water for the dunking? Is distilled water okay for the substrate mixture for brf pf tek jars?

Distilled water has no minerals and is also just plain unnecessary

I think you're not supposed to use distilled water for dunking because it leeches the nutrients out of your cakes.
I'm not sure about using it in your mixture though, I wouldn't think it would be too bad, but idk.

Don't use it for mixing substrate either. Just use tap water or bottled spring water

Well, I have 12 1/2 pint jars that I used distilled water for. I thought this was what I was supposed to do, because I learned it from a video I saw on Youtube, which must be outdated, and isn't standard pf tek.
Will they be okay, you think? Or is the batch doomed?

I did watch the videos at mushroomvideos.com, but I actually just sort of assumed distilled water was to be used because of prior knowledge I had from another video. I guess it just didn't occur to me to check what kind of water to use at that point. Good to know for the future, though. Thanks guys.

You are likely okay. Just don't don't use it next time.
I don't think there is much leeching in a BRF cake anyway, at least not by my understanding of leeching is.
More leeching may occur with the soak, but even then
I think the bigger issue with distilled water is it's affect on the pH I'll have to investigate before I could really have a good argument about it though.

Well, distilled water is said to have a pH range of ~7.5, and I cannot find any reliable sources for the pH of tap water. What's the ideal pH to use, exactly?

Bump for someone to answer above question?
Also, one more question:
I plan on using shotgun terrarium, but I don't think I have enough perlite to make up 3 inches height on the bottom of the container... Is it okay if it is about 1 inch of perlite, and I just use a bit less holes on the side?
Thanks.

Anything close to neutral is fine. Slightly acidic should be ok, since many cultivators use diluted coffee which can have a ph around 6. Although, the pH of your substrate will gradually lower due to the mycelium's by-products and fall outside of the optimal growth parameters. I wouldn't go higher than 8 or lower than 6.5 though.
1 inch of perlite is not enough to maintain humidity. Get more perlite or a smaller fruiting chamber.
