What's this on my cake?
    #18968614 - 10/12/13 02:39 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Still a noob here; just unsure what this funky stuff is on one of my cakes.

Not primordia or what ever, right? or is it!?

Or is the mycelium just taking over the vermiculite coat?  The cake has been in the fruiting chamber for a week now.

I'm clueless!

5" of perlite, fanning quite often, and cut back on misting to around 3 or so times a day.  I also have my terrarium elevated off the ground now as I learned to do so from my last post(foolish).  So whats up?

Did you give it a full week after full colonization to consolidate before birthing?

If not, then that is why it looks like that.

I have to agree. That cake looks unfinished. Wait until your jar is FULLY colonized, THEN give it about another 7 days to finish growing inward.

Bingo!

This cake had a 1/2 inch uncolonized spot on the bottom that seemed like it would never have been consumed by the mycelium.  I kept it in the jar for well over two months...  Just took a spoon and removed the remaining substrate, dunked and rolled and birthed it with my other cakes who are on their second flush.

So what should I do now?

Should I removed it with the rest of the verm on it's second flush?

Appreciate the feedback.

This is not what consolidation is for.

Mycellium grows outward in a 3d spherical pattern.

If the entire outside is colonized, so is the inside.

This extra week is so the mycellium can digest the highly nutritious substrate material it has colonized, and prepare to fruit.

I appreciate that clarification! It also makes a lot of sense. You learn something knew everyday. Thanks for helping me obtain the proper info!
