Avoiding friends that smoke cigs
    #18967164 - 10/12/13 04:57 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

At first I didn't mind second hand smoke but the more I read and research it I start to get the feeling I subconsciously avoid friends of mine that smoke.

Not only its bad for you but it tastes like an ass. I'm at a place where the government is considering bringing back smoking in public places like restaurants due to economic considerations (restaurant holders losing on custys cause of the ban on smoking). Its like watching the world going forward but this place is going backwards

Anyway what does le pube think about this. Its a shame cause some of these friends are funny and insightful. I don't give them more than 15-20 years left tho

I think I can smoke enough places not to need to bother those who don't want to breathe my delicious, delicious vapors.

Who the shit wants to chase their burger or whatnot with a drag on a smoke anyway? Those are like, two completely different activities.

I wouldn't mind a few smoking-friendly beer joints though. Maybe with a nice balcony.

Maybe ask your friends to not smoke in your immediate vicinity? Like, have them go outside for a bit whenever they want to smoke one? Really, this sounds like a situation you could solve without having to estrange people.

It would be inconsiderate of me to ask my buddy to not smoke inside his own home when he invited me over to smoke some weed

It wouldn't be inconsiderate to stop seeing your buddy because you don't accept his behaviors, while you probably do expect him to accept yours? Weird.

Apart from that, if a friend of mine asked me not to smoke while he's visiting me, I wouldn't do it. Friends to stuff for each other, you know. And they dare to ask for things too. Heck, I generally don't smoke at all when I'm around other people, unless they smoke (and then I might bum a cigarette from them ).

It would. but you don't have to chill there.

Still, if you friend had good sense, he would already have elected to smoke outside, or at least with ventillation.

My fiancee and I smoke indoors, which is not my first preference, but convenient. Still, we smoke near the door and leave it open, which honestly only helps by half. When we have company, we generally move the smoking outside, and especially if we have other smokers to visit. It helps, but not enough.

Smokers that don't respect non smokers do not have much respect to begin with.

However, it is usually the cigarettes, booze, sex, and general debauchery that makes a place cool. I've never heard of a place like CBGB's getting a rep for being awesome that is also a straight laced place.

I think cigarettes are suicide in the same way advertising is coercion

I smoke cigarettes and luckily Berlin still recognizes smoking as a practically timeless tradition. There are still bars and restaurants with smoking sections. The correct way to avoid them is to not go, rather than get uncle sam to make it against the law.

I do not understand people who bitch about second hand smoke, yet continue to go to these venues, when part of the reason why they are cool is BECAUSE you can smoke. I think a sign of being underground is related to if you can smoke in there or not. Once you cannot smoke cigarettes in a place, it has become a solidly middle class establishment, at least.

Once something is solidly middle class, than it is about behaviour, and not at all edgy, letting go, being yourself, etc. I think in some ways, art has ALWAYS carried with itself a self destructive set of vices. When you remove that, those people go elsewhere.

I get what you're saying.

Personally quit smoking about 2 months ago, end of a fuckin 10 year habit.  When I was a smoker I fucking hated smoking bans, now I'm in complete favor of them.

Now when I'm around friends who smoke I'm disgusted.  I feel hypocritical as fuck but it really is gross when you aren't participating.

Even as someone who smokes, I wouldn't particularly blame you for avoiding my place if I insisted on smoking cigarettes inside, especially if I smoked often. On the other hand, I think you are over-estimating the effects of tobacco smoke if you think your friends are just going to drop dead in 15-20 years because of it, unless you and your friends are already in their mid to late 40s or otherwise lead very unhealthy lives.

As for public smoking, I actually rather like the ban IN restaurants, but I think patios and immediately outside the doors should be left up to individual restaurants. Ultimately I think the choice should be left entirely to individual businesses to decide whether or not they will allow smoking in their establishment.

What gets me is the ban on smoking outdoors in public parks. I do not support or understand this.

Best thing you can do is hang around them with the willpower not to smoke. It feels good. Really a little bit of second hand smoke isn't that bad if you're not subjected to it all of the time. Just have to go with the flow of the things if its too smokey for you have to leave

Second hand smoke IS bad.
"Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemical compounds. More than 250 of these chemicals are known to be harmful, and at least 69 are known to cause cancer."

But you would have to sit pretty close to someone, or be in a small enclosed space, for second hand smoking to be a real problem beyond odor.

OP is in an enclosed space. Breathing in any amount of that shit certainly isn't good for you on some level.

Way too many of my friends smoke for me to consider this. They are nice and make sure that they are outside or have good circulation in the car before lighting up.

I guess I'd rather risk second hand smoke and have a good time being with the people that I'm friends with than worry about some studies I read on the internet and letting those studies dictate my life.

I try my best to avoid people who smoke cigs, I can't stand the smell. I have to take a shower and wash my clothes if I smell it on me. I can't avoid all of them, but I sure can try.

Cigarettes smell like poor people. Poor people smell like  :awedisgust:

Some dude needed to ride with me to work.  He starts  coughing saying how at least I have a filter on my end and asked me to put it out.  I didn't like the yuppie to begin with,  but that was the icing on the cake.  I had the windows down and my arm out the window blowing the smoke out.  I had to spend the next two weeks with him in a hotel room too.  Good kid, but....  But now that i hardly smoke I'm not liking being in a room with smokers.  I add a very small pinch to my J's now to help them burn steady.  But that keeps getting less n less.  I still want to smoke a cig if I'm having beers with friends and they smoke.  I just need to finish reprogramming my computer,
