Simple fruiting question, pls offer advice :)
    #18966963 - 10/12/13 03:11 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So i am about to pick my first flush from my first time cultivating, i spent a good year and a half researching into Psilocybin (ive been mystified with Fungi in general since my first psych experience. Starting towards a degree in Mycology actually). But unless i am constantly refreshing myself with books and forums, my shitty memory gets the best of me. I am re-reading this "bible", read it a good two, maybe three times Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook: Easy Indoor and Outdoor Cultivation. So a lot of knowledge is starting to come flooding back. I just need some advice on what to do for this grow. I jumped into it more as a practice round and once colonization was finished i truly grasped all that i've forgotten.

Let me get back on track, so the first two fruits were on the smaller scale and i just noticed the spores against the perlite this afternoon, their pileus have yet to flatten out. On that cake their is one other tiny cluster, one nice looking developing fruit and looks like the rest of the base are aborts (maybe will tear its veil in 12-24 hrs).
The other cake that is fruiting has a really nice cluster on it and it is reaching maturity any time today, the second largest fruit is leaning towards the perlite, might pick the cluster before that to risk any kind of contam from the perlite. If that really holds no risk then I'll let it mature further.
(My two other cakes have just begun forming clusters/pins)

I guess what i am trying to ask here is this, how long can i wait to pick a mushroom after it dumps all of it's wonderful spores, before it starts to go bad?

I am trying to decide to let the clusters on my other two cakes form and harvest all at once, or just carefully pick the mature fruits, dry them, and repeat when other cakes are ready. And how much of an issue is it if the fruit starts to rest on the Perlite?

Thanks for all your awesome epic advice as always,
Snorlax

The perlite is not going to contam your fruits, let them grow into it....or dig out some perlite right there.

Waiting long after the spores have dropped to harvest is not such a good idea.

Typically we harvest way before this point.

Not sure how long until they "go bad" once spores have dropped...

Yeah i know you're suppossed to pick them before then, but i was waiting for the rest of the cake, which is just about ready. I'm going to pick them in a couple hours and dry them.

SO do you just pick fruits as they mature? i thought that stressed the cakes out?

Yes pick them as ready. They are usually all mature within a day or two of each other

Aborts are definitely safe to eat

Keep them on the dehydrator in till absolute cracker dry? Leave them be on there, or rotate them every once and a while?

^thats my dehydrator

thanks for being helpful

Just stick them on there and forget about them for about 8 to 10 hours. With just a few fruits on there I'm sure they will be cracker dry by then. I have a dehydrator like that and even if I load it down it usually has them cracker dry in about 12 hours

Sweet, thanks for answering all of my tiny questions  :bandana:
Will be picking the mature fruits in an hour or so.

Also i should be spraying mist on the cakes twice a day? Not too much just nice even dispersal of mist.

You should be misting the cakes directly with a fine mist until they glisten, then fanning out the chamber.

You want to mist again once the water you previously misted has evaporated off the cakes.

This could be anywhere from 2-6 times a day....depending on you and your schedule.

Oh shit! did not have that part right, had FAE X2 per day written, will step it up.

I'm planning on going via Rye next go 'round. Seems more efficient, and those amazing looking fruits  :dawerp:
