MONSTER Shroom (photo) WTF is this?
    #1896625 - 09/09/03 02:17 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Here is a photo of a mushroom I found in a local rag.  I've never seen a mushroom this large and I was wondering if any of you might know what the heck it is??  I'm guessing it's edible since the guy appears to be carrying it home!  I'm guessing it'll feed a family of 12!!

WOW!

Peace,
-TekNut-

Great Scan, now I will find that newspaper somewhere and get a copy of the image from the news-service since i ma a member of the press.

That is a Termitomyces titanicus grown by termites in a termite mound or outside the mound in certain regions of Africa.

Here are a few more images of such mushrooms Ill have to find and re-scan these into bigger images for you later.

REMEMBER TO CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE.

and to shop you just how big it is, that is a yardstick and you can see through the cap how it extends behind the cap so you know it is big.

There is a great National Geographic "Termitea" film with two great time lapse movies of the termites growing these mushrooms, first underground and then a 2nd film of them bringing the crop above ground to grow even more. They raise them for food and kill all bacteria so only the Termitmuyces grows.

In Mexico it has recently been discovered a termite mound with a different species of termitomyces along with a PSilocybe shroom in their mound.

The termite film also has a giant kumodo Dragon killing a 15 foot cobra to shreads and mongoose and other critters who live and hang out in the termite mounds and the africans who pull the wings off the baby termites and eat their bodies alive with relish, not the kind which goes on hot dogs so do not even asked about thae use of the word. I relish the thought of eating frsh termites and Australian Grubworms. Had once to eat the latter withen our group of shrooms ran into a group of scouts on a survival trip and we all had to grub one down. Totaly disgusting oit was.
Wheres Crocofile Dundee when you need him. I bet Yahoo would hae been serious about that one.

mj

.

Here is the biggun.

That's cool as hell.

I recently read an article about the largest fungi known to man (which is also the largest organism known to man) although it doesn't have the biggest fruits. The mycelia network a particular Armillaria ostoyae (honey mushroom) in Washington state covers 1500 acres underground and is believed to be somewhere around 2400 years old. The fungus was found by observing a pattern of trees that its mycelium killed.

Some groves of Aspen are known to all one organism sharing a comon root structure, but nothing to date has been measure as large as this most recent honey mushroom discovery.

MJ,
I found a better photo than the one I posted.  I did a little searching on the photographer and found a much nicer photo.  You can even see the guy is wearing a Doors t-shirt with Jim Morrison on it!

Jeffrey Aaronson is the photographer and is obviously world renowned.  He has some very nice work you can check out here:

I hope you had a good time on your journeys MJ.  Some of us can only dream of your adventures!

Peace,
-TekNut-

You gotta wonder what kind of spore production that thing has... and if the spores are normal size or if they're like the size of peas. Imagine printing that mofo... you'd need the hood of a car.

Yep, looks like an axe ...  It would have taken him 20 minutes or more to eat through the trunk with his bare teeth!
