What is this? I was thinking either an Agaricus or a Stropharia species. Thanks for the help.

No not really. It doesn't smell like chemicals either.

After crushing a little bit up it smells like the blue-water they put in porta potties. They don't smell like anything I want to consume.

That is funny. The bathroom reference is. I likened the smell of A. californicus to that of a urinal cake. It smells just like them!

I am not certain enough to agree with that species. I have never seen any that look like this.
but I have only seen 3 patches of A. californicus.
The ones that I have seen had different caps. No undulations, not so dark, and the caps were all sort of, how do I say, striped? Not concentrically. And the stripes were more of a separation of a younger outer layer of cells much like that of a chlorophyllum. but again, not concentrically. Whatever the opposite of that is. derr

I really want to find some A. Augustus, I think I might have to start a quest to do so!

I have only found A. augustus a couple of times, and i've been doing this for along time.
One thing which will help (apart from spending enough time inside it's occurrence range) is looking, a lot. I haven't decided for myself whether stopping to look at every large, darkish Agaricus I can find, or figuring out how to not do so will make my time the more productive.
I say, start your quest.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Indeed. I was just pointing out the differences between these and Maynard's. His are very dark and strange looking. I would really like to know what they are.

That's gotta be phenolic, eh?
This has all got me wondering if my augustus ARE. Definitely almond, picked another small one yesterday that was well open, the almond scent was quite strong. And I've been gobbling them down, so whatever they are they're mighty tasty.

Agaricus mushrooms have such attractive gills i think. And overall for that matter. Especially big meaty ones like these.
