BAH..early pinning, cakes drying. case, no case??
    #18965321 - 10/11/13 07:00 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

well my spirits are down today. I nocced 24 brf jars a couple of months ago. Most of which made it to fruit, a few lost due to drying out. None lost due to contam. For the most part cakes were dryer than desired at birth because the GE wholes I made were too big.

I had 8 stragglers that I tucked away in a drawer and haven't looked at for a week or so. Today I opened it up and they are all 80-100% colonized however are pinning heavily, most likely due to dry conditions (imo)

I planned on casing these but now I'm wondering if it is going to be a waste of time, considering how much they have already pinned and dried (I'm assuming). I've never had to deal with such heavy pinning before, some cakes are only 80% colonized.

Any advice on what I should do? Break them out and case them, dunk them and just fruit the cakes as is?

If they're pinning most of the good advice I have seen is to just birth them right away even if they're not 100%. Dunk them for 12-24hours after washing the uncolonized parts off under a faucet. Then roll them in verm. If the in-vitro pins are big enough you could harvest them if they're smaller you can still dunk and roll and they should survive if you're delicate enough. If you do pull off all of the pins and what not the cake is still viable and will produce. IMO the best you could do for it is still give it the dunk and roll, the very least the dunk will re-hydrate it and bring it back as much as possible.
