Martha ain't big enough! The dudes edibles
    #18958858 - 10/10/13 11:21 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Got hit with another one of those "Let's wait for someone with a little experience to chime in!" comments, you know the 50ish post fools that always end their statements with , but Roger Rabbit says :facepalm3:
Reckon it's my own fault for not sharing my progress. Going to try and make it up by posting a little edible thread
I recently decided that the "Martha ain't big enough!" and dragged a 6'x8' GH out of the garage

A little shade cloth, a couple humidifiers and I've been blowing out bucket grows like these
"Night Velvet" Shiitake like these
A little Red Reishi

Some Lion's Mane

A little Jane

Todays project, bulking Hericium to a bran and gypsum enriched sawdust/woodchip blend

A few upcoming projects

Lot's more to come
:idhitit:

The shiitake are spawned and colonized in large .02 micron synthetic filter patch bags.
I use a .02 micron Whatman syringe filter on a 14g needle for GE on my LC jars.

Dude, that is fantastic!!  I have an outdoor walk in Martha myself that I am just now putting to use.  Sure is nice to have the extra room over the standard model.  Your oysters are crazy!!  You selling those?  No way could you eat them all!  The shitakes look great too.  Haven't tried the Night Velvet ones.  There is always so much to do when you get down and serious with the edibles.  It is tough when you are working a full time job or two!  I check my greenhouse by flashlight after work and before work and patiently (or not) await the weekend.

Great job, and thanks for sharing!!

I was a carpenter for 24 years, after a little spinal damage & 4 back surgeries, unfortunately am now permanently disabled, so no work, the silver lining to my cloud is that I now have plenty of time to study mycology.
Your right I can't eat all the mushies I grow! But my OCD won't let me slow down. As I'm trying to figure out the marketing side of this thing(with no luck at all) dried mushrooms are building up by the pounds.
So you haven't tried "Night Velvet"? What are you working with? I'm always down for a trade  Today I'm sterilizing wood for inoculation with the "Bell Weather" Shiitake strain.

The pride and joy of my eddie collection

A wild oyster mushroom that I cloned.
It was found by our trusted identifier RanD on a foray we did last fall. It's putting out some fatties.

Second flush on these 5 gallon straw buckets of Pink Oysters is coming on strong
5th flush pinning on these Shiitake blocks
Can't wait for these PomPoms to mature

Have you tried talking directly with chefs? That has always worked for me.

I often have to call many but that ain't no matter.

I always call and ask for the chef or sioux chef. And always respond with stuff like
"Thank you chef." and "Hello, chef." They love that shit.

I swear it has helped me sell mushrooms before.

Making Shiitake blocks today
My recipe is a slightly tweaked version of Noobies tek
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/favlinker.php?Cat=&Entry=123901&F_Board=13&Thread=11942926&partnumber=&postmarker=
I start with 16 cups of mixed hardwood wood stove fuel pellets, divided into 2 tubs

I add 1/2 cup garden grade gypsum, 1 cup wheat bran and 9 cups boiling tap water to each tub
(1 cup bran for Shiitake and 2 cups for all other eddies)

After the pellets hydrate it gets mixed well and placed in 4 large size .02 micron filter patch bags

While the sawdust is expanding, I have 20 cups of BBQ smoking wood chips boiling until most sink to the bottom

Drain the excess water and divide the woodchips amongst the bags

Then fold tyvek sleeves accordion style so the steam doesn't blow up the bags

I use a 1 1/2" spacer for the bottom of the PC(AA930) so I can get plenty of water in there

Over the spacer goes the first rack, then 2 bags with a couple mason jar lids around outside to allow steam circulation

Another rack, 2 more bags, spacers and a 3rd rack over the top to keep the bags from blocking the vents and blowing up the kitchen

Don't try this at home, but my fancy PC wouldn't push more than 14 psi
So I added weight to the rocker and brought the pressure up to 17 lbs

I'll PC these bags @ 17 PSI for 2 1/2 hours and let them cool over night

Crazy. Those patches look like the .5 micron.
never mind. They totally look like the type A.
And, your weight is probably correct by itself. I bet the gauge is what is
off calibration. So you are probably cooking at like 20psi.

I was getting more than my share of contaminated grain before I adjusted the weight.
This PC has a safety vent that pops at 20 PSI so I'm inclined to believe that my gauge is pretty accurate.

Wow... Thanks for the post.  I actually am about to try this myself with shiitakes and oysters. just obtained a bunch of hardwood fuel pellets, and have been sitting on the bran and gypsum.    Do you use the same mix for oysters (i noted you said 2cups bran for everything besides shiitakes).

Did you mix The sawdust/bran/gypsum mix in with the chips you laid on top?  Or do you leave the wood chips on top so the sawdust mix is kinda separate or underneath the chips?

Also can you or someone explain this step to me?  Did you fold the tvek sleeve along with the folds in the bag or did u just put a tyvek sleeve on top of the folded bag?  I figured this is where the bag would get impulse sealed, but if you are using agar->grain and not LC->grain then I guess you would not want the bag sealed.  Would they really blow up if you seal them first, and can they colonize fully without being 'impulse sealed'. I Have some bags I need to use up.  I don't have a flowhood so I figured I would for sure need to seal the bags to keep contams out and that I would have to use an LC syringe.  Can a bag like this actually be opened via SAB and inocculated with an agar slice without introducing contams? Or is this route only for those with a flowhood.

so you put bags in and not jars? how does that work? wont the plastic melt? do you make them seal air tight or does the water get in?

If I used this recipe for oysters, yes I would double the bran
I have to be honest though, oysters will do pretty good on wood, but they kick ass on straw, which is a cheaper, easier process.
No need to mix sawdust with wood chips at this point, it will be thoroughly blended when I add the grain spawn
The tyvek sleeve rests on the wood chips inside the bag and extends about 3" out of the top, then folded back and forth, this allows the expanding gases to escape as the wood cools
I no longer use an impulse sealer, always double sealed everything and still got failures. Since I changed to twist ties I haven't had one contamination due to a bad seal.
SABs are too cramped for inoculating these bags, before I had a flow hood I just did open air inoculations in the bathroom, early in the morning before the house woke up and started kicking up dust
The bags are made of an autoclave able plastic, they were designed for this purpose.

OH that's interesting! so you don't seal the bags, inoculate the bags with grain spawn, and mix it up? Then apply a twist tie?  Those bags don't look like they have much room for grain spawn, unless you use a low spawn ratio.
Do you open the bag and mix it up by hand in the bag? judging by some of your pics it looks like you might mix it altogether in a 5gal bucket... but that might just be the oysters!

Thanks for the info and great pictures.

I do the same as The Dude with the wire. I love it. I do not mix them by hand. Just kinda shake em up a bit.

Not sure how the dude does this.
